Try a bit of lube rubbed round the seal

It sounds as though it would be counter productive sliding around but it helps form a seal

Generally I just slide it a little while slowly pumping til I feel it start pulling a little - voila! Sometimes it’s a little more tricky even though it’s usually the same pump and nothing is different
