Notting Hill Carnival- should it be banned

I read some horrific stats regarding the notting hill carnival.
on average in the past say 5 years play a every year there have been over 200 arrests made, drug dealing,knife seizure and sexual assaults...
so my question is should it be time this festival is banned? |

Look into other festivals and see the arrest rate and the likes and ask yourself,

Unfortunately you will find that another festival that happens every year has this many arrests...
people living in the area board up their homes due to d*unken dosprdwe violence etc

alot of the arrests were drugs.
not that im saying its ok, but in some other countries there would be alot less arrests...
also the nottinghill carnival is securitized by the police and not a hired company... so the arrests look worse than what it is compared to festivals and so on. |

When you look at the amount of people visiting carnival the number of arrests isnt as bad as it sounds. The policing of the event is far stricter than at other music events/festivals where drug use is overlooked. At carnival it isnt. Thus the number of arrests. At festivals there have been drug deaths and sex attacks yet theres no call to ban them. People that go and enoy Carnival love it. Its usually those that have never been that call for it to be stopped |

It's funny how the Notting
Hill Carnival attracts so much negative press. I am given an hour at the Reading festival I could arrest 400 people for drug offences. This reminds me of the US drugs policy from the 80's. Cocaine possession attracted a caution, crack possession attracted a 5 year prison sentence.
It's down to who politicians are seen to be tough on. |

There were 71 arrests at Glastonbury with massively fewer people attending. Is that going to be banned?
There are problems, undoubtedly, but the carnival I’ve been to a few times is full of joy, with wonderful parades and DJs. |

No, we enjoy the festival. All festivals have a crime rate but other festivals stats don't really get reported on as they are protected by private security firms while Nottinghill is protected by the police. My boyfriend has been going to festival on and off since the mid 90's and says police often turn a blind eye to drugs at the festival. People always walking around smoking big joints out in the open. The knife thing is a big issue at the moment so no doubt checks have been ramped up. 200 arrests out 2 million people is it? There will always be a few bad apples in a bunch no matter where you are or what festival it is. Don't let them bad apples spoil everyone elses fun.   |

Some ridiculous comparisons to other festivals. Notting Hill is free and because of the crowds it attracts criminality. Other festivals are ticketed and the scale of disorder doesn't compare. Sadly the liberal intervention into police stop and search has slowly eroded the ability to control the streets and deal harshly with the trouble makers that spoil it for everyone. Oh ffs I live there & the area during carnival is the safest it can be. They even had metal detectors in place this year. It’s one of the hardest FREE events to Police & they do a fantastic job in a very hard environment. Try policing 2 million people coming into where you live. Give the area & police a break. It’s no different to anywhere else in London. |

On the 27th August the Daily Mail (who else?) printed side by side photos (of a black man with a baoon in his mouth and a white woman with a baloon in her mouth) in it's coverage of the Notting Hill Carnival. Unfortunately FABs doesnt allow me to post photos to show you.
The caption below the black youth reads: "A man inhales a SUSPICIOUS balloon, often used to take hippie CRACK". While the caption below the white women reads: "A carnival reveller huffs on a balloon thought to be filled with nitrous oxide."
This type of racist reporting is reminiscent of what took place in the United States following hurricane Katrina in 2005 -whereby black victims in search of food were described as "looters" and white victims described as "survivors".
At the close of Carnival 2017, British newspapers deliberately peddled the lie that there were numerous acid attacks at the event. "ACID ATTACK ON CROWD AT NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL" read The Telegraph. "CARNIVAL GOERS RUN IN FEAR AFTER ACID ATTACK" read The Sun. "CROWD HIT BY ACID ATTACK" read The Independent. "ACID ATTACK SPARKS PANIC" read The Mirror. "ACID ATTACK ON CROWD AT NOTTING HILL" read The Metro.
The truth of the matter is there were NO ACID attacks at Notting Hill Carnival 2017.
Several people have challenged any British Newspaper to present the name of a victim of one of these mischievously reported acid attacks. It shouldn't be too hard to establish the truth because had such attacks taken place, then the Metropolitan Police would have crime numbers and crime reports - they would also have been obliged to investigate. The ambulance service should also have records of people treated had acid attacks taken place.
The British media must be held accountable for their racist reporting and their relentless campaign to malign and discredit the Notting Hill Carnival and its organisers. Their actions result in scaring away potential sponsors who do not wish to attach their brand to chaos and criminality - thus impacting on the financial independence of the Notting Hill Carnival and its ability to properly fund itself.
It is time that the establishment of this country valued the economic, social, and cultural contributions of the Notting Hill Carnival and embrace it as part of the British cultural landscape. |

I've been to Notting Hill carnival many times and I don't think it should be banned. It is a great festival celebrating West Indian culture and it's open to everyone. It's a great advertisement for diversity in the united
kingdom. And the police do an amazing job rooting out the majority of trouble makers before the event hence the fact that there was only one reported stabbing at this year's event. It's still one too many though. And as for the drugs. You'd be hard pressed to go to a drug free festival anywhere in the UK. The Sun reported that there had been two stabbings attributed to carnival on Sunday night. One in Harrow and the other in Bow. Now knowing London like I do I can tell you that Bow is in East London. Nowhere near Notting Hill. Harrow is close but not close enough. So they can't attribute those stabbings to Notting Hill carnival. Trouble will happen at any big festival so with that in mind should we ban all festivals and let the security firms who police 95% of festivals look for other work? It might even free up some police officers over the August bank holiday but it won't stop the trouble on our streets! |

You're either an ill informed nugget, or something far worse and quite sinister. After all, as has been mentioned by others and I've personally experienced myself, plenty of other large scale gatherings/festivals have equally substantial levels of criminality present. But I'm sure there wouldn't be the same discussion about banning Glastonbury!
Fact is, whatever criminality takes place at these sort of events, it's merely a reflection of modern British society. So drop the cultural profiling, you're coming over as a complete cock knocker  |

Here, here! even 500 arrests with attendance numbers of 2million plus is nothing - try comparing that to footbal lmatches, and consider that the matches nly last a couple of hours whereas carnival is 2 long days! And as for local residents having to board their houses up in fear, that is nothing like the experience of any of my mates who live in that area. Most of the people I know round those sides turn the day into a money making opportunity, selling drinks out their front door or charging a small fee for bathroom use, or renting their home out to someone for a ridiculous amount and going off on holiday using the proceeds.

Hey why would you ban something that entertains and gives a community a focus because of a small minority of crooks, who are doing that stuff irrespective of the carnival, all to often this country bows to the minority groups I for one am sick of it, leave the good things don't get rid of good because of bad people  |

The Leeds West Indian Carnival (which has been going longer that the Notting Hill one) had 150k attending and had just 4 arrests .
So when adjusted for attendance the Notting Hill arrest rate is still 6x that of Leeds suggesting that does have a particular problem . |

I think it’s important to understand why the Notting Hill Carnival was started in the first place.
It was to recognise the black community in the area and country when they were new to this ‘now diverse’ country.
Question is, do we still need it? I think yes it’s a celebration, so why not. But the black community needs to do more to tackle crime taking place at the Carnival. |

There is a comment above stating private security firms police other festivals. This would mean no publication of stats is required. Arrests are probably a good hiding in a quiet corner
Anything that can damage the firm's reputation is hushed up and " dealt with" internally.
