try all 3 !
shaved then goatee then beard
if you dont like the beard trim back to goattee
if you dont like the goattee shave down to smooth

Hubs recently bought one of them
"i-stubble babyliss" thingys..
It shaves to a very low stubble - which i dont find itchy at all..  and its good for trimming pubes down etc 
and saved a fortune in razor blades.. |

Chest length biker goatee here.
Was going to keep it as a full beard but Trace said with my bald head I looked like Uncle Albert! 
The good thing is.....there's no more damp patches on the bed after oral! R
