This is a genuine question for the barebackers amongst us out there.
Would you bareback with someone who was upfront and disclosed that they were HIV positive and undetectable on meds?
It is actually safer as someone who is on meds cannot pass the virus on as opposed to people who do not know their status, or have not tested and may be HIV positive with a high viral load, therefore likely to pass the virus on

"I'm sure this will go well lol"
Hopefully it will.... it is a genuine question aimed at us barebackers, not intended for the pitchfork carrying safe sex police |

No I would not do bareback with a person with HIV on meds, how would I know they had actually taken the meds? I would not meet a person with it for swinging purposes.
If I met a man and fell in love with him and him with me, I would have protected sex with that person.

Looking at it purely in terms of the stats
You’re way way more likely to die if you smoke or are overweight than by barebacking someone HIV positive on medication with an undetectable viral load
Saying that the stats don’t include the psychological aspects and for most that would outweigh the pure mortality risks |

One of the reasons for the rise in stds including syphillis and hard to treat gonnorreah is that so many gay guys are taking prep so they don’t get hiv . So they bareback , don’t get hiv but get other Stds .
I can’t see this as any different . What stops you getting other diseases ?
So it’s a no from us . |

That is very true....still susceptible to other STI's of course...but the thread is aimed at fellow barebackers and their views on undetectable (no risk) HIV |

Is that true though?
I thought as part of the health clinics giving prep they required regular screening? |

If it was someone I was in a committed relationship with, yes.
I probably wouldn't with a random person. Mainly because they wouldn't have my interests at heart and may lie with regards to the viral load. |

I'm not normally one to throw my hat into these discussions (nor go around barebacking), but the lack of understanding of STIs on this site and within the wider community is staggering.
First of all, Google "undetectable = untransmittable" and read the article on the Terrence Higgins Trust website.
Secondly to the "bareback = death" squad I ask you this: How much do you know about gonorrhoea and chlamydia and do you use condoms/dams every time you go down on someone that isn't your partner?
Thirdly to everyone: How often do you all get tested?
If the answer is not "At least once every three months or more often", that's frankly irresponsible and you need to start taking your health more seriously.
STIs are a fact of life. Anyone can catch one, much like anyone can catch a cold. I'd have thought that if any group of people were to understand this, it would be this community, but clearly not. The stigma needs to stop because it isn't helpful.
Want to bareback? Go for it. Know what PrEP is and get tested often.
Always use protection? Great! Well done for taking precautions. But don't for one second let that fool you into thinking you're immune to catching anything, because you're simply not.
(I'm half expecting responses to this along the lines of "Well I always use protection and I've never caught anything" and if that's you, I say congratulations, but it proves nothing)
If you get tested and are diagnosed positive with something, do your best to let everyone know that you may have passed it on to.
That's not a pleasant thing to have to do, but we're all adults here and it has to be done, as it's the responsible thing to do.
Yes, there is antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea going around and we should all be concerned about it.
That said, last time I went for my checkup I asked them a few questions about that and they informed me that Umbrella Health (the company that deals with it in the Birmingham and Solihull area - unfortunate name I know!) haven't yet found an infection that they couldn't treat. That's not to say it won't happen of course.
Be safe, have fun and do whatever it is you want to do, but sexual health is everyone's responsibility regardless of practices so get tested.

It’s an interesting question OP. I can’t answer you of course, as you know from other threads we’ve both contributed to, we don’t bareback.
But if we did, I would probably go with the answer someone else said: and that’s, if I did totally believe in what you’re saying about the meds, as a casual sex encounter why / how could there be sufficient level of trust. Some people aren’t even honest about their names and ages, so it’s a big ask.
But I guess from your replies some people do trust your word. |

Where on earth are you getting that information from that it's gays fault for stronger strains of sti's. Oh it's something bad to do with sex, blame the gays! The cause of stronger strains is more casual sex across the board, tinder is just as much to blame as grindr would be. |

I had a friend who was HIV and was undetectable. I still never slept with him we were more cuddle buddies. He passed away two years ago. The cocktail of drugs he took just to keep in reasonable health was alarming. 30 tablets a day is no way to live.
Please take HIV seriously regardless of your viral load count. He was only 44 and was infected through a blood transfusion many years ago. |

Firstly, sorry to hear about your friend. He was infected many years ago (through no fault of his own) when what little medication there was was very toxic, I know as a friend of mine has been positive for nearly 30 years and she went through the hell of ill health until the introduction of combination therapy in 1997. Modern medication is much more tolerable and prognosis for anybody diagnosed today is a normal lifespan when adherent to meds. |

Poor choice of words on my part , the stronger strains aren’t any more down to the gays than any other .
It is however a fact that PrEP is causing more issues particularly amongst barebackers , and that was the point I was making .
I totally understand your outrage at my implication that gays are causing stronger strains . I lived through the eighties when they were blamed for everything , and that was down to the government , doctors and the media . Things have moved on massively since then , understanding and common sense prevail now .

Google "prep and stds" and look at the article on the aidsmap site and you'll see that your claim is simply not true. It states the results are in fact inconclusive.
The reason is that it's far more multi-faceted than that, as there are other variables to consider. If you're going to make such a claim, you need to back it up with some evidence.
I understand where you're coming from, as if you are on PrEP (and your liklihood of contracting HIV is near zero), you think that everything else can be treated with antibiotics/vaccinated against, therefore you may think you can partake in more risky behaviour with fewer consequences.
Don't get me wrong, some people do think like that, but to make a blanket claim that everyone or that the majority does is exceedingly bold.
If you do so happen to point out any raise in statistics, you also need to correlate that with the increased testing that comes as part of taking PrEP and compare that to the participants testing regimen before PrEP, condom use before and during PrEP and probably a whole host of other comparisons I haven't thought of off the top of my head.
PrEP isn't going to cause any more issues with barebackers if they were barebackers before starting PrEP. Its use may lead a few folk to be more inclined to throw caution to the wind, but it's no where near to the levels you're talking.
Nothing in medical science is ever that cut and dry, also, ensure that wherever you're getting your statistics from is a reliable, reputable source. Red top tabloids do not count. |

Would I encourage my nine year old niece to jay-walk? Of course not!
And I find discussion threads on Bareback kinda like that.... It's "No! No!" Simples.
But in reality we all cross the road where we like. We mitigate risks by being careful - and sure, pedestrians do get killed but isn't that just part of life? |

You're not exactly in the zero meets club so i think you know the answer really. Most BB here seem to operate on a don't ask, don't tell policy. |

There are stacks of studies showing that there are way more std’s amongst gay men on PrEP . One such study shows that gay and bisexual men on PrEP are 72% more likely to get an std than they were before starting on it .
The study uses the same reasons as you have suggested , and backs it up with published evidence . Look it up on hivequal.
So in response to the op , for the reason that PrEP makes it more likely that they will have another std , it’s still a no from us . |

Not a cat in hells chance. Yes someone may have a undetectable viral load, but do they go regularly to their check ups? Do they take their anti viral meds the way they should?
Yes you can take PrEP If a risk is known but it's a hideous drug that can leave you feeling shocking and is of huge financial burden to the NHS.
It would take a lot for me to trust someone enough to go bare anyway and I certainly wouldn't trust that someone is taking their anti viral meds correctly |

I'm curious about one thing OP, you wish to be honest and open about your situation correct? You're clearly looking to meet people. Your profile points us to check out fabguys for pics. That person checks out fabguys and learns your 'secret'. My question is this. Why hide everything on this site, but you're fully open on another?
Give everybody the facts up front so they can make an informed decision before even having to message you about your 'secret'. |

Personal choice.... If people are interested in meeting then they will message me, if not then fine.
Anyway this is getting away from the original thread title |

No glove no love.
I don’t trust anyone to go bareback unless I know them well.
There are people that are either not upfront about if they are clean or not or don’t bother getting themselves tested.
Which is why condom is essential if your meeting someone you don’t anything about.
I wouldn’t meet anyone who has hiv as there is too much risk involved even if they are on meds.
I don’t want to sound harsh but I’m not putting myself at serious risk by giving bareback to someone with hiv.
There is no benefit big enough to outweigh the risk.

To be fair, he does say he will tell people before they meet, so he is giving them the choice.
Given the prejudice around I can well see why he doesn't mention it on his profile. |

As someone who doesn't know a lot about the topic, but who does have leukemia, I personally wouldn't risk it. Cancer cells for me are undetectable now in blood tests, but do a PCR genetics test on DNA extracted from my blood and it's still there so my train of thought is undetectable doesn't mean it doesn't exist. |

Firstly, sorry to hear of your condition. Yes you are right in your assumption of undetectable....the virus still exists, but in a minute quantity of sleeping cells that cannot be eradicated by treatment as in effect they "hide" from medication. |

Aha I've got you now cheers for that, and no need to say sorry I'm over the worst, still a bit to go but it's similar in that it's never eradicated there will always be some chromosomes that are different.
One potential that springs to mind when you say sleeping cells is keep an eye out for anything which appears in the future that may change that, the meds I take can reactivate hep b into a deadly version from the antibodies your immune system has if you've had treatment for a part infection even if years ago. I was fully screened for everything and have never had it |

That’s an interesting comment about the rise in stds because of “so many gay guys barebacking” is syphillis and gonorrhoea a Gay only disease? I have to defend us gay guys. It’s a known fact gay guys are tested more at gum clinics than ever before, also the increase in the said stds is not because of gay men only. It reminds me when I was 18 and aids was rige my dad saying “you gay men killing all the straight men” with this aids. . Lol. I don’t bareback muself and still get checked every 12 weeks. |

You can defend all you like but the fact is that there are concerns over gay and bi guys on PrEP barebacking more BECAUSE they take PrEP . That is a fact .
Hetro people don’t take PrEP so are less likely to take the risks that someone on PrEP take .
You only play safe so it’s irelevent to you . We know plenty of gay and bi guys who are on PrEP and at least half of them do bareback and feel safer doing so because they are on PrEP .
Never once did I suggest that only gay guys get stds , of course it’s something we all need to be careful of . We have risky sex as we have multiple partners . We also get checked every six to eight weeks even though we play safe for penetrative sex . Oral is bare though , and as we meet lots of people it’s best to get checked more often .

" . I will protect flippant remarks about gay men and your stats, increase in hiv !!!i yes amongst straight hetro people over 50 especially in Europe while the virus is reducing amongst younger gay men. In my profession clinical stats shows a reduction in hiv and aids due to control and an increase in gonorrhoea due to antibiotic resistance. If one does continually meet and does oral often yes testing more often is a great idea and would advise anyone to do it. I don’t so no need. I am
More sub and get used safely. |

The OP is right, it is actually safer to have B.B. sex with someone on meds and undetectable. So many guys now state they are negative but on PreP which is a lie as it’s not available on the nhs yet. Saying that I wouldn’t on purpose have sex with someone who is known positive. People should be up front and I respect that as it allows the other person to have a choice. HIV doesn’t scare me it’s the people who have it that scares me! Just because it’s a treatable disease doesn’t mean people should be careless and complacent which unfortunately happens nowadays. |

Oh and the steepest rise in ANY STIs is amongst the “heterosexual “ community now the homosexual one. I used inverted commas as it’s the “straight” men that is statistically the highest risk group because they transmit to both sexes and don’t access the appropriate sexual health services. That’s why the clinics use the term ‘men who have sex with men’ so it isnt using a label and all those “straight” men can still be tested appropriately as homosexuals need different tests than heterosexuals depending on the sexual practices. |

"This is a genuine question for the barebackers amongst us out there.
Would you bareback with someone who was upfront and disclosed that they were HIV positive and undetectable on meds?
It is actually safer as someone who is on meds cannot pass the virus on as opposed to people who do not know their status, or have not tested and may be HIV positive with a high viral load, therefore likely to pass the virus on
"
On meds or not you'll still catch HIV from a person with this illness. |

I find this thread topic actually scary as hell!!....and why I never bareback...I mean what if this guy with HIV that thinks he's safe to bareback because he's on meds, witheld that fact with the sexual partner he was barebacking with?
It almost puts me off meeting anymore |

Where on earth do you get your "facts" from?! A person with HIV not on meds and with a high viral load is more likely to pass the virus on yes, but still not a given. A person with HIV on medication and adherent will have an undetectable viral load and therefore cannot pass the virus on..... Hence barebacking with a Poz person is safe as opposed to random meets with someone who doesn't know their status.
Check the PARTNER Study (HIV) or U=U (Undetectable=Untransmittable) to bring yourself up to date |

No it's not equally high, that's utter rubbish. 1 in 500 people in the population have AIDs but it's 1 in 7 for gay or bi men in London and 1 in 25 gay or bi men across the UK. |

When on a Terrance Higgins HIV course 10 years ago we were told women stand twice as much chance or even higher of catching HIV from an infected person than a man, this will explain the large amount of women who are positive. |
