South Wales

An odd word, with a few very different meanings. Around these parts it's not uncommon to 'ponce a fag' (borrow a cigarette), but the word has uglier uses as well (as does 'fag').

Do you have any odd words or phrases local to you that have multiple and surprising meanings?

There and to the left a bit

"bum" can have a similar meaning to "ponce" as in "Can I bum a fag off you?" - which caused much consternation amongst our colonial friends when an openly gay guy walked towards me in an open plan office in Houston saying it loudly!!

"It's fine, please don't worry about it" means "I'm going to hunt down you and your family and exterminate your bloodline."

I explained to my European colleagues that the phrase “with respect” meant the exact opposite. This was quite a revelation to them and it’s become an in joke, they use it to the company owner who still thinks he’s being treated with deference

I work with this dead cute young Polish lad who's not been here long. His English is excellent but idioms totally confuse him sometimes. Like the first time he asked "How is your day?" and I replied "Smashing thanks!" and then had to explain myself

Spunk. See my post in the lounge.

When I captained a football team my team talk at kick off was “come on guys I want us to be down their throats and plenty of spunk right from the off”.

It put the opposition right off
