Gender Roles

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I was raised in touch with my feminine side intact and will cook your fave meal and even able to do the dishes after... however I'm from an era where men and women have their "roles"

In a world of "equalty" and being "politically correct"

What roles are still gender specific...

Mans job to go downstairs in the middle of the night for drinks. Lol

I'm single and live in a house share, so there aren't really any gender specific roles for me. If I don't do it, no one else will.

My housemate (male) won't let me drill holes in the wall. That's nothing to do with him being male though and more to do with him living in the house for 30 years and knowing where all the electrical wires and falling down bits are.

I do want to wallpaper my bedroom, and don't have the foggiest on how to start, so I'm tempted to pay someone to do that.

What the fuck has cooking and washing up got to do with ‘being in touch with your feminine side’?

Was using that as an example of some people's perception of "gender roles".

It's not that serious and pal, abit of banter, and Jesus doesn't exist so what's that got to do with Fab Forums. Lol

Why does it need to be jumped on. Read between the lines guys.

Just trying to define any unwritten "gender roles"

Why do threads always have to be scrutinised, if it's not for you then leave it... lol

None as far as I'm concerned. I'm proudly raising two children (of different genders and sexualities) who happily flaunt outdated gender expectations.

Yeah, I can't actually think of anything, but I guess that can come from 6years without a man about. I check out noises in the house, spiders are my friends, bins well I've never been bothered about that just the same with furniture assembly.

seeing how some of the men are that I know, they'd piss me off, mainly just pure lazy and that's what I wouldn't put up with. I can check noises but so can he, same with assembling furniture... Just do it, get it done and out the way.

I don't see the purpose in behaving according to a role just because it is the expected standard, if it's inappropriate for someone. Do things from choice and desire, being the free spirit that you were born as.

In a disaster situation e.g house fire, the titanic, hostage situation... it is the man's role to stay and die whilst the women get to leave with the children.

I think gender specific roles are a bit 1960’s but whatever works for you! My mum and Dad always have had them and still do to this day - Mum does cooking, cleaning and housework and Dad does DIY, gardening and decorating. It works for them so I don’t knock it! But I have been a single independent Mum for a long time so I do it all.....well sometimes with a bit of help from Dad!

As a single mum , I’m teaching my kids independence. I would not say cooking an cleaning is feminine. Gordon Ramsey is far from feminine.

Everybody should be able to feed themselves. Gender roles are dying out. I would say more traditional things are staying, like a man walking on the outside of the pavement. Father walking bride down the isle

Some really great and funny comments...

Well I'm a full time working single dad so gender roles went out the window when I became mum n dad.

All though most women are capable of the "bins" and other tasks that were historically known as a man's job, there's things I just wouldn't want my woman doing and would step up as the man to do it.

Probably down to upbringing and seeing mum do everything meant that when I settled down I would do the things I saw my mum have to do.

I will carry the shopping...

I will pay for dinner...

Unwritten rules of what a man should do.

Are there any unwritten women rules???

But not all women would want that, me for example I'm quite capable of carrying the shopping so if I'm already getting it or carrying it I wouldn't want a man to think he should be doing it as its a "mans job".

I did wonder if I had become too independent, but realised I hadn't, I'm just not reliant on others and can manage both alone and with others.

I don't believe there are unwritten rules for anyone, but I know others do as they believe a man should pay for dinner and hold doors open etc, whereas I believe both should.

I think my word "feminine" was misused and taken out of context, so forgive me.

I was raised similar to how you're raising your children, I'm also doing the same with mines too. That independence and balance is crucial.

However you hit the nail on the head, its "traditional roles" that I was trying to get at and see what traditional role do people still uphold.

Thanks

Believe me I understand that independence all to well. When you're sat up waching YouTube videos on how to do your daughters hair you realise that gender roles are a thing of the past.

I actually quite enjoy do the roles that were historically seen to be a "woman's job" and show my son too so he can go on to be a well rounded man.

However I'm also very old school in the sense that I would carry the shopping and pay, not because I don't think you can or because I think I have to. I would do these things because anytime I've been in a relationship, I've taken it upon myself to be "Provider and Protector"

Thanks for your post great comment

We share the jobs equally in this house but if I thought someone had broken in in the middle of the night, I'd let him and the dog sort that one out.

That's exactly it... I'd expect a man to go down for things like that as it's our duty to protect. (I understand that not all women need/want protecting. I understand some women are single and go downstairs too. Lol)

Are there any such expectations for women too???

Gender roles are a thing of the past. I’ll

Let anyone male or female carry heavy things for me or cook or clean. Equal opportunity and all that.

I don’t think anyone should expect anything based on gender.

I like to think that I believe in and practise equality in my outlook on gender roles ... in the workplace, division of chores, showing men the same courtesies as I do women, etc etc. I think and hope that I do treat everybody with equality regardless of gender, or anything else for that matter.

There is one thing though in which I can't seem to help myself treating men and women differently, which is that when I'm out and about I will almost always use male toilets. However good I'm feeling about the way I look there's no escaping the fact that I'm pretty obviously not a genetic female, and I hate the thought of walking into a loo and making women feel uncomfortable. On the other hand I've never given much thought to whether men feel uncomfortable when I walk into a gents.

Maybe this is unfair to men and patronising to women, but it's one gender division that I can't seem to get past.
