Yay did my first cycling in 5yrs today!
Forgot how much the seat hurts your ass when you not used to it.
Used to do 100+ miles per week, basically every week.
One day will be able to afford a bike! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
Typical the one nice day of my week off is today and yet I'm shattered from two late nights out and driving to Vanilla Alternative and back last night! Definitely missed the early 'beat the traffic' start and not sure I have the energy! Rainy long ride during the week it is...

Been doing quite a bit of turbo work over the winter month and managed to get out yesterday for a 45 miler, averaged a healthy 18.6 mph so it’s paid off.
Normal rides anywhere between 40-100+ depending on weather and othe commitments.

Love to get out on the bike for a bit. Not quick but can happily do 50 miles or so. Have put myself down for a 100 mile charity ride in May. Eek. So far half distance and 2/3 speed. Bit of work to do and not much time |

I did both road cycling qnd mountain biking but then in February my road bike got nicked, and my mountain bike got the front end taken off of it. Got half a mountain bike in bike storage.
1100 to get the mountain bike back on the road. |

Go out for 1 or 2 70 mile plus rides a week, with 3 shorter rides around 40 miles and work on speed. You'll see good results in that time. But before your first century you need to be well rested and have 3 days of staying on a strict diet to get you body ready. I've done a few centuries and they take a toll. |

Wouldn't be spds on a road bike as they are for mountain bikes. Would most likely be cleats. |

I know, I had both of them for my road bike. Spds for commuting and cleats for going out on rides.
Only use flats on my mountain bike though. Don't feel safe doing down hill and free ride cliped in. If sam hill can pull a podium in them then I have no issue with them. |

I agree, all cyclists should be made to pay a contribution to road tax and also be fully insured. Why not, motorcycles have to be ?? |

So if we pay road tax on other vehicles that should be ok then by your admission?
Put it this way.....where I live the one thing I cannot stand is car drivers, we get inundated by people who “pop to the beach” at a weekend and have no comprehension on how to drive properly let alone the back roads of Norfolk.
It’s fair to say doing the job I do now and previous experience that my driving skills are up with the best in terms of awareness and driving to the conditions at speeds that require split second thinking and decision making. Car drivers on the whole cannot drive safely and are oblivious to other road users. To many times have I been to either injured or fatal accidents and the cyclist was doing nothing wrong apart from being out on a nice morning ride. Cyclists have every right to be on the road it’s just car drivers need educating on how to read a road and drive correctly.

And to add it’s called and has been called vehicle excise duty since l1937 and money goes into government consolidated fund not the roads fund, it’s there to cover emissions. If you recall emission free cars don’t pay any VED so why should a cyclist?

In the killer heels or spds?!?!
Bet you look amazing in your Lycra x Which do you think!!
My perverted brain says killer heels every time.. Sadly, knowing the practicalities of cycling I guess it'll be the SPD's
Still, either way I bet your rear looks great x
Wouldn't be spds on a road bike as they are for mountain bikes. Would most likely be cleats. " Really? I have SPDs on my tourer - much more comfortable for cafe stops and socializing... |

I’d say bike fit isn’t right for you. Could be all manor of things.
Top tube wrong length,
stem length wrong.
Saddle height incorrect,
pedal arms wrong length,
Frame wrong size in general
If you can I’d get to your local bike shop and get a fitment done. There not expensive and will save pain after a ride.

Thanks very much, sound advice, I've adjusted as much as I can without getting a fitting done, might be time to give it a go. Cheers |

What’s my fetish got to do with the conversation? Fortunately for me and others on this thread it shows your only commenting to get a rise out of people. This was a thread about cycling and helping people out not for narrow minded people such as yourself to jump in on with actually not a lot to input. If you’d now move on to another thread as us cyclists have things to discuss.

Enjoyed reading this thread, haven't been able to cycle for 6 years really and feel envious of everyone.
Was never an expert but pretty capable IMO. Had just done my first 60miler on 29.9.12 and was raring to do it again the next day before factors intervened.
Does having a road bike make a big difference cos I was doing it on a Trek? I remember only being able to get to a certain speed and feeling I was at the bike's limit but not my own.
I am fortunate to have long legs which I'm sure was helpful for long steep hills, I guess the same way a jack is able to lift a car? |

Yet again another misinformed car driver.
For the umpteenth time!
There is no road tax.
There is vehicle excise duty.
This is based on the vehicles emissions.
A bicycle has no emissions, there fore no tax to pay.
As for insurance most cyclists have insurance from a professional governing body, such as the BCF, CTC, RTTC, etc. If not it is with their home insurance. |

With generally narrower wheels & road tyres that tend to be slicker than MTB etc, a road bike will make a difference.
With a previous road bike, I also felt that I could give more, but couldn't get the bike to give it. Changed the gearing on it & instantly better. |

They do say the best climbers are the smaller riders, only have to look at riders like Pantani, Robert Millar. Although I was a fairly decent climber years ago. |

Sorry, but I hate f**king cyclists.
I live and work in a rural area, and I work any of 7 days a week. Trying to get to work at weekends is miserable down to the hoards of Lycra clad townie-tossers who think the countryside is their own personal theme-park.
Several weekends they even try to shut down local roads for Club competitions, roads local to where I live, not them!!
I’m certainly not alone in my hatred of these bastards! |

Snappa,
I too live in the countryside, drive a car as well as cycle.
As is usual when someone displays hatred using such vile language; it says more about you than the people you so dislike.
I only hope that your ability to control these feelings is a little better when you are behind the wheel.

In my own time, I do like things unhurried, but when I’m going to work, the clients get the jump if I turn up late. I probably should say, i don’t have any issue with cyclists on their own or horse riders. It’s the gangs who seem to revel in clogging up country lanes at weekends, often deliberately preventing safe overtaking. On Sunday, a 30 mile trip across Sussex, I encountered 6 different packs of these evil beasts, all dressed up like their favourite druggy sporting heroes.
