Just another way for attractive women to make a living. Not bothered either way but I do think that it is ironic that feminist pressure has led to these opportunities being withdrawn for those women to take advantage of. |

As a fan I don’t care, they get in the way of the cars.
Apoarently they’re gonna let kids (fans not models) go on the grid in their place, which is fantastic |

"No more grid girls in F1! Is this right?"
Well, some (presumably) less attractive, boring women somewhere probably decided that it’s offensive and degrading to women to allow other women to choose to become grid girls so they took that choice away from them. Another fine example of feminists fighting for equality.

Yeah...a bit like when the chubby Victorian kids didn't like the skinny kids getting all the best chimney sweep jobs and got them banned from going up chimneys too...
And some people call that progress hey...

Must admit when the news first broke I just thought that it was another step towards madness for our society.
But then when they released the statement saying that they were going to let the youth of the sport take the role I quickly changed my mind as that is a fantastic way of being more sports and engineering to a younger generation |

What will they be doing exactly? I'm just thinking about the teenager who recently lost part of his legs whilst racing, obviously the kid's aren’t going to be doing that. I don’t know about it to be honest. |

My guess will be they’ll be like the kids in football, they’ll meet all the drivers etc. and they’ll be in the grid which is an amzing experience.
Then kid who last his legs was a young driver, and he lost them drivng, not attending an f1 grid, I don’t know why you even brought that up it has litteraly nothing to do with this in any way. |

I think the most vocal opponent was frank Williams’ daughter who is now head of Williams f1. It is pretty archaic but it’s also ironic that a small minority of women are speaking on behalf of women but not necessarily reflecting their desires!
I did read an interesting article with a pit girl who said she did it because it paid for uni course in engineering and helped pay for her amateur racing license and now she won’t be able to afford that.
It’s a mad mad world |

This is the way I look at it.
If you were designing a major sporting event from scratch today, would it include glammed-up young women parading in skimpy outfits?
Probably not.
It belongs in the 20th century. |

I'm in two minds.
However if there were grid boys too I'd support the "I'm only doing it to support my more worthy lifestyle" argument. |

There and to the left a bit |
I think the way I look at it (same as with the darts/boxing etc) is what purpose do these women serve other than to dress scantily for the enjoyment of leering men?
If that is their only purpose, and the job couldn't be done equally as well by a man, or dare I say it a woman that wasn't stick thin with model looks/aspirations - then I can understand why they're being pulled.
Sure the ladies that do it will argue they're losing out on a job they are happy to do - but I think anyone that lost the kind of glamourous job that it obviously is would say that - I mean in all honesty who wouldn't want to be paid to jet all over the world, staying in luxury hotels etc?
I know it may seem like PC gone mad to some, and yeah glamour sells, but when there's no actual sale and it's just for the titillation factor then there's a time and a place for those who want to see that sort of thing, and I'm not sure sporting events are it personally |

It's about time they banned all modelling. Women should make money from hard graft not just for being born pretty then spending time in the gym and watching what they eat to try an maintain a body that will pay their tuition fees etc etc. How dare they take advantage of men with their good looks! |

Maybe it'll push some of them into porn or even prostitution. Then at least the filthy men who used to leer at them might get to see even more... a great day for feminism. |

Clem kind of has a point. It is essentially a modeling gig. Or rather was.
Susie Wolfe said it didn't particularly take up too much of her thoughts but said she supported the decision. That's hardly leading the cause as was suggested above. |

I am 100% behind this decision.
Removing women from their choice of employment and replacing them with cheap child labour is a positive step along the capitalist road.
What can be the harm be in replacing expensive sexy models, that a few men might perve over, with cheap children? |

It's a hard headed decision made by hard headed capitalists. . In this day and age having scantily clad women knocking around sporting events looks naff and appeals only to a small and declining demographic. . The bosses of F1 have calculated that maintaining this will ultimately harm their brand and thus their bottom line.
It's nothing to do with political correctness. It's the free market in action. |

Career? Yes, it's a career. These women are models and F1 is an option that was open to them.
If your not sure whether modelling is a career then take a look at Katie Price, Melinda Messenger and Kelly Brook. They are all former grid girls, and seem to have done quite well in their careers. |

That’s a bit of an exaggeration, the career path is still open but there is now one less place to do it for 20 women.
On the flip side, women being portrayed as just something pretty to look at is something we should have evolved away from by now. If it’s some women’s way of paying her way for an engineering degree then that’s great but if the F1 companies valued her they’d take her on as a junior engineer, not as someone with long legs and a big smile. |

The issue is that sporting events that were once firmly traditional male preserves now want to attract Women, children and men who don't think of ogling young women is part of a nice sporting day out. Things like grid girls are clearly not part of that marketing strategy.
There are still plenty of places where men will pay money to look at attractive young women, so I don't think we will see a queue of long legged blondes outside the dole office any time soon. |

My point is that if an employer is not willing to offer a particular job, then there is no choice to be had.

This for me personally. However I've seen the flip side which means a lot of women are out of jobs they enjoy. One of whom is a friend, but she was a Darts Dancer, which I see as entertainment.. like cheerleaders doing halftime shows to keep crowd pumped up.
I've got stronger personal opinions that i dont really want to voice, as it'll just cause an argument. |

I'm always mildly amused by how many people (well, men really) trot out the "grrr aaargh they're doing these lovely nubile saucy young fillys out of a job grrr aarrrgh feminism is bad for women grrr aarrrgh let them do their job grrr aarrrgh feminazi grrrr" argument every time there's a discussion of this nature.
Seems to me, in a nutshell, that the F1 bosses have cancelled a contract with a modelling agency to supply twenty models to race events. Agreed? So, what I'm wondering, is if you'd all be so red-faced and swivel-eyed and vomiting out your impotent rage onto the internet if they had cancelled a contract with a catering firm to supply twenty catering temps in tabards to serve tea and biscuits to the engineers in the pit?
Of course you fucking wouldn't. It's nothing to do with the girls' jobs, it's to do with you looking at their tits. |

I don't actually watch F1 but Mr Ruggers does and although he would probably look if there were tits on show he is a leg man really, that is by the by though, if the women in tabards served shit tea then no it wouldn't be an issue, but if they were doing the job they were meant to why get rid of them just because some people object to tabards and tea? |

My point is they don't want anyone to do that job now, male or female. Hence there is no choice to be had by anyone.
And why I said " wanted "
It's true though, the choice has been taken away from women who were happy to do it no matter if other people are offended by them doing it.
Only in the same way that the choice was taken away from anyone who wanted to be a coal miner when they shut all the coal mines...
That isn't a good comparison to be fair"
Why not? Steam trains drivers used to be someone railway companies were willing to employ, but not any more. Grid girls were people F1 used to be willing to employ, but not any more.

"As a fan I don’t care, they get in the way of the cars.
Apoarently they’re gonna let kids (fans not models) go on the grid in their place, which is fantastic

Because the railway companies realised running them would lose them money. Ditto F1*and grid girls.
There's this bizarre idea that the hard headed capitalists at the top of F1 are so scared of a load of gobby feminists that they sack all their grid goals even though all the customers want them.
That's so much bollocks. Mores have changed. Something that might have attracted their target audience Fifty years ago does so no longer. Hence their decision.

Why would they do it then if it wasn't about improving their brand image?
The fact is is that these days most people think that having scantily clad women around for purely decorative purposes is completely naff. Hence you will only have them if your target market is more or less totally unreconstructed men. That's clearly not F1s target market.

I think they should do what they have to do if they think it will improve their business if it isn't working for them now so yes I sort of agree with what you say....but I also think the women being on the grid doesn't seem to have lost them any money.

They carry out jobs that the team is too busy to do.
They hold up the advertising in front of the car, they will hold an umbrella over the driver, they will keep press and other people from passing into where the team are, and they add a bit of appeal to a part of the race that would be really boring otherwise.
End of the day loads of women are going to lose their jobs. Loads of women who work very hard on their diet, their looks, exercising etc etc.
F1 has used grid men before, and even sports that use regular people and not models use them, for example in motorbike racing someone has to hold an umbrella over the tank, in big races done by grid girls/men, in smaller races done by someone in regular clothes.
End of the day all these tasks will still have to be done. They just picked pretty people to do it in the past so the cameras would pause on them for the adverts they had. |

Well if you think it's a bad business decision, I suggest you tell F1.
Like I say, societal values have changed. When F1 started, having attractive women about the place gave an image of glamour and sophistication. These days it looks a bit sad and seedy. You can regret that change, but you can't deny its happened. F1 recognise that and that's why they have made the change. |

"No more grid girls in F1! Is this right?
Well, some (presumably) less attractive, boring women somewhere probably decided that it’s offensive and degrading to women to allow other women to choose to become grid girls so they took that choice away from them. Another fine example of feminists fighting for equality.
Mrs x "
They should've introduced grid boys (men, of course); then F1 would've been seen as an equal opportunities employer.
Doesn't help that the only woman on the grid are the grid girls, so males get to do the lead role whilst woman are a supporting act; looking pretty and saying nothing. |

That just accepts that the women are losing their job due to feminism. Someone will have to take their jobs, because someone will still have to hold the umbrella, roll out the team numbers, and place the adverts infront of each car so the cameras can see it as they pass by them on the grid.
It just wont be an attractive woman doing the job now. |

So people get the job on the basis of their ability to do the job rather than on the basis of their looks, age and gender.

They did, in a few races they had gorgeous tall men do it. Women fans liked it, and the men didnt mind.
Some races even had ripped to fuck men hold the umbrella over women racers, etc.
But all of it will be scraped cause it was not about equality, it was about women saying that the gird girls were being objectified. F1 wants to have a corporate image based on looking to the future, so man or woman they have to go to appease the liberals. |

This is an interesting development. I didn't really know what they were there to do, other than smile classify and get hosed down with champagne. So what you're saying is that the jobs will still exist, the only difference is they won't be carried out exclusively by scantily clad models?

Yes, usually they are given the advert to wear. Either way an advert will have to be put in front of each car.
It is likely no one will stand infront of the cars now, and a banner will be rolled out by someone paid 2p. It's likely the people asked to hold the umbrella will be given team clothes to blend in.
Think about it, you have mechanics and engineers and racers kitted up in gloves, someone will have to hold the umbrella. Who? You're not gonna ask anyone on the team to, you will have to bring in an intern to do it and pay them nothing.
They will likely lose their jobs to men. Men will wheel out the stuff then return to the side. |

BTW there was little pressure from feminists re this decision, mostly it came from the embarrassment of the growing number of women employed in legit F1 jobs.
And F1 has new owners. F1 has been under pressure, losing ground to other competing motor series (competing for TV rights, advertising and sponsors) that have been taking the piss out of F1 for being stuck in the dark ages and who ditched their own grid girls years ago.
Meanwhile the new owners of F1 was to revitalise the sport and distance themselves for the decrepit misogynist dinosaur that ran it previously.
This decision is a perfect way to show they are not Bernie Ecclestone. |

"No more grid girls in F1! Is this right?
Good riddance... so demeaning... hired to stand holding a sign while looking pretty in a costume"
Not like all those other models eh? Hired to wear clothes or hold perfume bottles etc while looking pretty. |

Just to go off on a slight tangent. Did anyone notice with the Darts, that while the big breasted lovelies were removed from the walk on. They still had scantily clad dancers on the stage? Not much of an attempt at 'let's get rid of the dolly bird image' was it? |

Wow, great response. Thanks guys / girls. Interesting how the sponsors never seem to have a problem with the grid girls. They are not saying much now, the grid girls will be no more in F1. More men reply for jobs in F1 than woman, so that's why there is more men working in F1, than women. The driver's media adviser's are all women!! Will they have to go too!!? |

They are going to replace grid girls with young karting junior race boys / girls. These will be chosen locally. So apart from supplying outfits to the kids, there will be no costs as such involved. So F1 saves money by not employing grid girls . So has this been done more for commercial reasons ? Due to F1 trying to save money. The new owners not getting the returns they thought they were going to get when they bought the F1 rights for television etc. |

Those models are performing a task pertinent to the thing they are promoting.
Grid girls just hold a sign. That isn't even a useful task.
Everyone in F1 has been embarrassed by the presence of grid girls for at least 10 years but sexist dinosaur Bernie was in charge. |

You really have no clue about the costs of F1 do you ?
Besides they the grid kids programme will undoubtedly be built up into a big thing that engages them in the sport and hooks them up with teams and advertisers, and provides loads of real life human interest stories.
Unlike girls hired to hold a sign. |

If people wish to check the internet / motorsport web pages. It is reported a lot about F1 cutting costs. This could range from all using same componants, having less engines to use or no testing on friday of a race weekend. Ferrari have already said it is possible they may pull out of F1 if the rule about all teams using the same engine is brought in. Most teams admit the need to cut costs. This as Liberty reported a 13m downturn in revenue 2017 . Compared to 2016. This is why they are trying to cut costs. |

"Now F1 has started to enter the 21st century let's see female drivers and more female mechanics "
If Suzie Wolff can't crack an F1 drive (which is very sad) from her hubby Toto - team boss of Mercedes F1, I doubt anyone can which is very sad. They should have launched their own series, maybe with pink cars. |

Isn't that the teams themselves? |

PC gone mad again. Its only a job. Those young girls get paid to look pretty. Why not earn money out of your looks ? All that happening is those girls are losing income. Yeah some men may letch but most just want to watch a motor race. I find it strange that on certain tv adverts ... diet cola , yogurts etc women are seen lusting after half naked men and nothing is said. Can you imagine the outcry if it were reversed.

Any young woman is perfectly at liberty to earn money from her looks from anyone willing to pay her for her looks.
As it happens I wouldn't pay money for a young woman to parade in front of me holding a sign, and neither will F1. thats my choice and F1s choice and in no way impacts on those who are willing to buy and sell a young woman's looks. |

Lets get some perspective... if you're interested in cutting costs in F1 then its the technology costs of the teams that are where the big savings lie.
Saving the small change that is spent on grid girls is insignificant. This isn't being done for cost saving reasons.

It's bleeding obvious it's being done because it's bad for their brand so will effect their bottom line in the long run. |
