Tend to agree although that's not to say that in 6-12 months the future generation/versions will be more even more practical for use and abuse in the school yard.
Never purchase first gen tech....next gen is always just around the corner and usually has the bugs sorted. |

New kindle version available in the states at a fraction of the cost of iPad and by all accounts very good but I think laptop for first experience as these devices are more fashion statements although def they way forward.
Like most new tech always try to avoid 1st gen, unless of course your happy to pay maximum cost for new product.
Remember how much you paid for your first VHS, cd player, DVD player/recorder, lcd plasma 3D TV and now blueray |

Can you imagine the way the new Kindle tablet is going impact the market! Android powered and more portable than the iPad. Can run flash so you can see all web sites. AND... equivalent pricing in the states to about £130! OK, will likely be £200 here as we normally get the direct dollar to pound conversion! Perhaps even be a nail in the coffin of the Windows smartphone/tablet operating system!
But you are right, I would also buy a notebook or laptop at the moment. Tablets are still just fashion accessories at the moment. Is she taking it to school? Would make her cool, I suppose, but not really right for school…

Kindle will have access to amazon library and although it won't exactly sound the deathnell for apple it will make a significant dent!
I for one will wait till its launched here before considering and then give it another few months to see if a second gen becomes available.
Never going to pay through the nose again just so I cam say yeah! I've got one! |

"How will the kindle connect to the internet. With the playbook as long as you have a blackberry phone you will always be connected o"
That may be true, but that always on connection will cost you! The Kindle will connect through a phone as well, but is not limited to a Blackberry. I would imagine it will not be long until Kindle connects with 3G like the e-reader does, although that will up the price.
Unfortunately, my experience with Blackberry phones has turned me right off their products so wouldn't have one. However, the Android system does everything I want, quickly and without fuss.. No quirky menu system that is so counter intuitive and a keypad that has decent sized keys!
There is no doubt, Kindle will repeat it’s march into the e-reader market with its new tablet and will definitely make the iPad the “D&G” of the computer world!

Depends on what you want to do with it.
If someone at school is going to do a course that requires computer, then check whether any specifics, e.g. essays in Word format.
If for taking notes in class, is keyboard quite and fast - generally touch screens are not fast.
Connectivity for Kindle Fire if it gets to the UK, easy, use a MiFi to give mobile access via WiFi. Will be looking at the Fire as to how much of it will work when outside the US, as visiting at Christmas. |
