The last one was clearly popular as it got too big.

Maybe it shows the desire by lots for a dedicated forum? Anyhow, continue the love...

Us too. It’s worth bearing in mind though that the make/model/price of your chosen camera has very little to do with the quality of finished images.

Agree with this too. A bit like assuming a chef can prepare a wonderful meal simply because he/she has an expensive oven

I use both Canon and Nikon gear. I inherited a D810 with a couple of lenses. I've always had Canon kit since I started out with it yonks ago.

I saw your earlier post about having canon and Nikon and did wonder why as doubling up on lens would be prohibitively expensive for most people, inheriting makes more sense

Absolutely, and with a 28-300 attached to it, it makes a great 'do all jobs in one go' setup when speed is of the essence at weddings.

The Canon stuff has my wife aperture primes attached for the more creative shots.

I do occasionally put mine into auto, if I have to work quickly in changeable conditions. It's not a bad thing. I see people ridiculed for it and think why?

My old man has what is basically a £6000 point and shoot with the way he uses his, but the pictures are pretty damned good at the end of it.

There's a high level of snobbery involved with photography. I shoot mainly sports photography and use AP as my preferred mode. A fellow I shoot with quite often uses Auto everything, including ISO and the RAW results are probably not far behind the stuff I produce. The main difference in the final image between the two of us seems to be that he uses manufacturers own processing programs in a very basic manner, crop and possibly a bit of enhancement, whereby I use Lightroom and rarely edit shots the same night I've taken them as I like to reflect on what I'm going to do with them before starting the processing.

I think snobbery is the wrong word. There are people who go out & spend £1000s just to have the latest kit & assume it's going to give them the best image quality & make them a better photographer. These people have no interest in learning how a camera operates, the exposure triangle etc & getting full value for money from their purchase.

Then there are those of us that wouldn’t pay the exhorbitant prices of canon or nikon, especially for full frame gear. Not knocking those 2 makes as good cameras just that what I paid for my body and big lense combined was still cheaper than buying a canon 1dx body

I didn't immediately go to Canon, when I started I used medium format, my first serious camera was a Lubitel for £30. Over the years I use Yashika, Olympus, Centon, Nikon, Pentax, Monnolta. In the end I just liked how Canon Worked, and it suited me.

My first digital camera was a Kodak DC1, a BIG thing with a huge long battery looking thing under it. was like the size of a car battery, so Canon wasn't my first call in Digital.

These days Fuji, Pentax and other brands have caught up, but 10-15 yrs ago, they wasn't really an option. So when you own thousands in speedlites and L-glass, moving from Canon to Fuji is conceivable, so we are locked in a an eternal battle

Its like Apple vs Android and there is Windows and whatever else, or Nikon vs Canon and whatever else.

It's not the equipment it's the way you use it.

But if I ever get hold of a 645 or 6×7 medium form mamiya I may change my mind.

Currently using Nikon film and digital... fitted with medium format lenses... but then I never do conventional

I stuck with pentax and was quite late to changing to digital so it made sense to me to as I could use my old lenses. Currently have the K1 full frame and last year bought the 560mm prime lense.

Always enjoy going on the canon stand at the birdfair and looking at the equipment there. Well out of my price range

Canon man here shot raw aperture priority then into lightroom got the D5 full frame and D7 love my photograph landscape wildlife and street photography are my favourite subjects. I also did glamour in the past but it got a little expensive paying for studio and models.

If anyone would like some photos taking then I still have the studio light to take them.

Sony user here (?? shock and horror I know), though have used both Nikon and Cannon as part of my role as an intelligence photographer. Apart from a faster shutter speed on the multi shot modes I find Sony’s more user friendly and having access to the old Konica Minolta lenses means I’m not forking out as much as I would be for a more used name.

There are lots of good tutorials on various subjects on YouTube.

I'm a Canon user and whilst the 'photography basics' apply with whatever brand you choose I find it almost impossible to use a Nikon (or any other brand) as although it does the same things the symbols and menus are different. Get to know your kit intimately and you will get better results.

"I shoot mainly sports photography and use AP as my preferred mode."

Generally speaking Aperture Priority is my preference too, but often when shooting sports outside, and importantly when weather is consistent and not changeable, I will use Manual as it means if your framing is slightly off the camera has no scope itself to meter off of anything else (like bright or dark kit worn by players).

Studio lights and their light shapers is where the magic is at. I shoot on everything from miniture format to 10x8 large format. Tracey uses her phone or when feeling arty her rolleiflex tlr. film becomes addictive though when people ask about the darkroom I have to remember whom I'm speaking too.

That kind of thing happens loads at the bigger studios.

Mine is too small for that kind of thing, barely manage had a dozen people at best.

I got a ban for mentioning sites, but google is your friend for seeking out those kind of group shooting opportunities.

there is non swinger modelling sites and a lot of photo studios do model evenings whereby they set up the lights and you just press the button. I think a group of swinger camera owners shooting swingers would get out of hand to easily. It's hard enough in the vanilla world to keep it respectful when a young model poses infront of a group of middle aged camera owners. Not saying you would but there will be at least one whom thinks the shoot includes model access.

I always find peoples journeys to brands interesting.

I had the same as above Nikon just didn't work for me, didn't feel right.

I ain't going to knock Sony users. Their latest is it 3/4 (I'm not as up to speed these days) looks phenomenal.

A few swingers clubs do photographer nights, sadly my nearest is Town House (Wirral) and neither them or any of their "reps" replies to me.

I messaged Amours in Manchester about setting one up and they didn't reply either.

You know your a single guy when not even swingers clubs reply :p

Nik poses for other photographers. I have no issues as they are trustworthy as for most it's their job. If some random on here with a smart phone wanted to do pics she would say no.

Actually had some bloke mail today offering to do pics. The quality of the samples he sent were shocking . I had to decline his offer

So many valid points! Especially the one about automatic.

Terrible twosome you don't look like you need someone to take photos of you. A couple on your profile are really nice! Pat the photographer on the back.

Easy way to tell if someone is a photographer is ask fir their website. If they're a pro they'll have one. Then again, lot of people would consider themselves to be pros with no formal training.

I would love to arrange an outdoor photo shoot with a lady or couple but never know how to approach people. Plus a lot of people claim to be photographers so no one believe you when you offer pro images

a few things I think you need for good photos are a fast lens min f1.8 for a short prime. I use a 85mm 1.4 a lot. outside I like to used a 100m 2.8 prime. that gives amazing sharp images with great bokah.

get your location sorted, a nice window with good natural light or somewhere interesting outside.

if you use flash never use on camera flash, always use a diffused speed light

plan your poses for the model. get your model to look on line at poses.the shape the model makes is crucial to a good image.

look on art nude sites for inspiration, never look on here lol.

Yeah prime lenses are the way forward. I had a sweet set up in my last job where I only had to buy the body and I could use all their lenses. Some 400mm set 2.8 beasts as well! We're beautiful!

I'm documentary and a photojournalist so I'm as interested in the Larry sultan style side of it where I'd like to do a project in clubs or at dogging locations to show the true story.

Lighting and location are definitely a good start. Off the camera flash is something I'd work my way up to. Keep shooting on manual, work hard with photoshop and experiment. I've got a degree and masters in photography and still feel like I'm learning

"So many valid points!

Plus a lot of people claim to be photographers so no one believe you when you offer pro images

thanks

I will sometimes use av mode. iso in auto.

always in RAW and a smallest jpg to quickly scan through when home.

I like to play in ps and lr and camera raw. also googles nik is good for some stuff.

orange and teal is what I like this week but that will no doubt change again. "

Yeah always raw! Even when shooting sports I Used to try and use raw even though each photo took ages to process. And yeah lightroom

Is a god send! So much easier than ps when it comes to anything natural looking

Ohhhh that's something I've always wanted to try. I know what you mean about moving - once you buy into a system, there is too much invested in it to change to another brand.

I'm a Nikon shooter, d7100 d750 and a small but growing collection of glass - next purchase in the sights is the 85 1.8g

I got a Panasonic g7 cheap for making 4k home videos, and I have to say the quality of stills you can pull out of the 4k videos is very decent -see profile pic - it's a bit mangled by this site and looks over sharpened partly bc of the premiere pro video filters used (I think beauty box and red giant)

Anyone else pull stills from video? Great for action selfies with a tripod

If things go well in work this year I'll be seriously considering a d850, partly for 4k video (and also for medium format league DR, natch)

Under my adult alter-ego I used to shoot on a canon XH-A1 not 4k, he 4k wasn't even a notion.

Used to take lots of frames out of that. 640-720 res to show what was in the scene was amazing.

Still had to shoot stills but you could bulk out on frames.

I'm currently using the 5d MK2 for video as don't shoot that much any more.

5d mkii was the go-to camera of the indie film maker not so long ago, great video iq...

One thing I really like about 4k is you can shoot wide and zoom/pan in post, and still output full res 1080p

There is a percentage of Ironman 2 shot on the 5d MK2 too.

My pet hates is also my main love with video, sometimes I'd love some sort of tracking for the focus other times I love that it's locked as it stops you being lazy and zooming.

The MK3 has the AF but I wasn't bowled over.

Some of the small hand held cameras now are outstanding, the days of xh/xl and ob size shoulder mounts are over.

What do you mostly shoot video wise ?

That's a pretty good selling point, effectively reshooting without reshooting.

Video af on the Nikon cameras is a tragedy .. I end up manually focusing and keeping a small aperture, shame because you miss out on the cinematic look, shallow dof ...

Panasonic g7 af is brilliant, you look at the video in post and it is just in focus without any hunting...

Mostly I shoot sex videos with my wife Juliana .. actually that's all I shoot

4k is great bc you can get wide and close up I need another 4k cam for getting reverse angles .. I also got some continuous lighting, but I need more (always need more light!)

St. John’s

Well I agree Camera make/model don't make the photo, a good combination of lenses/body can really go a long way to easily making a great photo. I've been doing photography for almost 35 years and still learning... I like digital now that it has caught up with film quality, however it took awhile to get here.

I love some peoples photos with a variety of angles/composition/lighting, it takes time, practice and a willing model To me getting a picture fab'd is easier if its' a great photo. Now if only I could find where I secretly stored my photos safe from my kids eyes... so secret even i'm having trouble finding them again grrr... stupid computer failures, didn't have this trouble with pictures in books

Cheers, take more great photos, love looking at them.

Any Sony users? I'm a bit of a franken-camera user actually! Sony, Pentax 645, canon, contax, tamron kit all make its way into the kit bags. I just go for anything that gives the quality I want.

"I am just starting out and just bought a p600 is it worth taking a course or should I just get out and start snapping "

A course does not develop instinct for each scene, go out and shoot everything in sight until it feels second nature, Critically review your shots and remember no photographer outside of a studio gets 100% great shots. It is all very well talking about exposure and aperture but if you are not in a studio the scene has gone by the time you select manual.

Manual is great if you shoot in the dark or in weird lighting or static shots (and I do regularly). Auto is great for catching the moment and sports/fast scenes just focus on the composition. You should practice manual and program modes on static stuff then you still have that option when you get better at the basics.

A photographer makes a picture, the camera is just a tool. I have been doing photography for 40 years and about 25% of my stuff is good and 5% exceptional according to my friends and I am perfectly happy with that as I am not a pro. I use Nikon D40, Sony DSC-W800 and Experia E5, cheap photo LED light and a tripod.

I shoot video on a Sony FS7, I tried for a year to use DSLRs but the Nikon D4s was terrible to control, and in terms of audio recording was awful. So I shoot video on the FS7 and stills on the D4s.

I have a kit lens for the FS7, but also a Metabones speed booster, so I can use my Nikon glassware too. My current lens stock is the “holy trinity” 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 all 2.8, and also a selection of primes notably 50mm 1.4 and a 105 2.8, which I use for macro work.

Both cameras record onto XQD cards, so I’m able to share media.

I've spoken to townhouse, I emailed from my business email instead of my play email, figured maybe stand out.

The lack of a ratio is my only concern. I.e. may end up with 20 guys with cameras/camera phones/etc and literally no one in front.

However a couple I would like to physically say Hi too, are there, and I can look around the venue and maybe plan something for the next time.

I'm about 90% certain I'm going, just juggling a few balls at the moment. Rather add myself late rather add myself and not make it.

@TerribleTwosome did you used to be Manchester based ?

Instead of doing a photo event townhouse should just let one photographer do a documentary project over a couple of months. Make them part of the scenery and get 'Larry sultan the valley' style images. Include portraits and tell stories of the people who will talk about scene. It would take time to do well though

Make sure you stock up on spare tubes :/

I'm more recently doing I guess documentary, press, events, nightclubs and some adult based stuff. Mostly boring stuff :P

You'd have to be there every week and get to know them all. I'm sure if you're not exploiting them and it's done in an objective way you'd be ok. You'd want to get the regulars on board as they'd be the most interesting part

Just to be difficult: it's all in the glass - the camera body is just a glorified accessory. I began with a Zeiss Contaflex eventually migrating to Olympus. Use a Sony bridge with Zeiss glass for technical work (stonking good Macro) and when Olympus went into Meltdown moved to a Nikon (choice governed by son having Nikon so we could share toys). I yearn for a split lens rangefinder and simple on lense aperture/speed selection - my Contaflex is still the easiest to use SLR in complex photographic scenarios.

Glass is the main thing but a good body helps. I have a ff canon and compared to the crop I had it's a different beast. The focus is so quick and colour seems so much better. Not to mention the other bits it can do also.

I only need a 135 prime now and I'm lensed up. Canon or art though mmmm

Yeah I agree with the above comment. Glass is most important but if you're shooting nature or sports you would need a body that caters for that. Most agencies just ask that you buy the body and they provide the glass

I was always canon until I went to upgrade to the 5d mk3. When I compared it to the d800 here was a clear winner and I ended up switching to Nikon

Not tried the Sigma, but have the Canon 135mm f2 L and it's so bloody good. Best lens I've had really, with the exception of one of the LF lenses I had.

That Sony sensor Nikon use is really good. Much better than anything canon have all round. But then I never like the ergonomics of the Nikon's so started with canon.. Now I use the Sony over the Canons for everything except two events a year and the occasional press portrait when I need speed

My mate works for Sony and apparently they make sensors for canon as well now. He recommended going over to one of the mirrorless models they're releasing as apparently they're going to dominate the market

I still remember the first time I used the Canon EOS 1 NRS or RRVSJFKFK some letters, used it at photofair in Manchester.

It had a semi-pellical mirror which didnt move, and could go throu a 36 frame film in a few seconds, it was so fast.

I think I'd like to see that back for digital, mirrorless isn't for me yet...

Pellicle mirrors were coo, but when canon can get 14fps out of the 1dx MK2 with a normal mirror then there isn't much point in a pellicle version. The Sony A9 can do upto 20fps with compressed raw, and no mirror !!

I still use Canon and have done for 18 years. Admittedly, Nikon has surpassed Canon with its sensor and the whole mirrorless fad is there to keep the geeks at the edges of their seats. At the end of the day, cameras are only tools and if I can’t shoot a great picture, I’m not getting booked and when you’re working in the advertising field the stakes are high. M

Mirrorless is hardly a fad. We have had allsorts of cameras without mirrors for decades if not a century! Canon making the 5dmk2 video capable with liveview showed that a mirror isn't really needed for most photography. And the latest bread of mirrorless cameras form Sony and Fuji are showing that they can compete with bodies sports togs usually use.

I think in the next 5 years you won't find a conventional DSLR from anyone other than say the top Canon and Nikon bodies aimed at sports/action and those who don't want to change. But cameras like the 5d's and d800's will eventually be fully mirrorless.

I was thinking more about the noise, I don't do weddings or anything like that, but the click clunk caused by a mirror could be removed.

I don't keep up that much these days so my information maybe quite dated.

When I bought the 5d mk2, and sometime after, there were concerns the prolonged use of mirror up, direct sensor exposure could shorten the lifespan of the sensor.

Has this issue been resolved or are they just cheaper to repair/replace ?

The other issue was with the shutter remaining open, poor quality glass with flakes of metal or other debris which found it has an open body is fare more likely to find the sensor.

I'm assuming mirrorless don't have a shutter either or does it pop open ones pressed ?

I really need to get back up to date heh.

I use Panasonic Lumix GH4 which is a micro 4/3 mirrorless, and I use a Pentax K1 as my full frame DSLR.

I prefer the mirrorless format for the speed for example 12-16fps with little noise due to no mirror reflex going on. I also like the fact you have the live view in your view finder, so if it's sunny you have the ability to use focus peaking in the view finder, and are not struggling to view the live view screen. But I prefer the full frame for image quality, wider angle lenses and the Pentax K1 slaughters the Lumix GH4 in low light conditions and dealing with noise in general. I suppose this is where the larger sensor size shows it's quality.

Sony seem to be paving the way with there full frame mirrorless cameras, I think they are the DSLR killers and will be taking over Cannon and Nikon soon. I still think there is a place for micro 4/3 as the line up from Olympus and Panasonic is very good and the video quality is really impressive. And the smaller lenses are a big advantage for portability, especially if you have to use big zooms to shoot sport or wildlife, as the crop factor of the smaller sensor is doubling the reach of the lense.

Not noticed any issues other than more frequent cleaning. My 5dmk2 is still happily working, even using LV a lot. The 24-105mm died a lot earlier!

I just wish Sony would implement the shutter closing when the camera goes off so that it keeps some dust at bay on lens changes.

Most still have shutters, though even those are becoming less needed with electronic shutter improvements. Look at the Hasselblad x1d. No shutter in body, and can use adapted lenses without shutters in ES mode.

Ah! yes! Dust! I keep any working camera in an evidence bag when on a dusty or complex shoot. I try to limit lens changes by preparing each needed lens with a body before venturing out into danger. Any noninterchangable kit always lives in an evidence bag - with interchangability there is always a backup option - with small or bridge cameras it's an expensive repair or the dumpster.

MPB have been getting quite tight of a late. I know of a couple who have sent them a lens for it to be rejected for fungus when the glass is clear. Also regrading items willy nilly, so ensure to be 100% open about any defects of marks. I tried to trade a couple of lenses in and was really low balled on price. Be a trade I thought I'd have got a better price, but not to be.

Can anyone recommend an ND filter make or range?

I've tried cheap no-brand eBay ones and they always leave strange colour effects that can't be removed in post

You can pay any amount for a filter, but I'm just looking for the cheapest that won't affect colour too adversely

Probably 2-3 stops, it's for using big apertures with strobes

Thanks in advance!

I use Koncept filter. K&F. They are plastic rather than glass (because of the type of photography and situations I get myself in) they can leave a colour distortion if stacking them but nothing post production can’t handle.

If you want and optically refined glass filter I would say Nisi are by far the best at this time.

I used nisi but broke two in a matter of hours hanging from a scree slope. Was an expensive shot. Went back to plastic

I was looking with my partner at 3 X soft box set up with a backdrop , it's only for pics at home for fun .

Any ideas if it's worth getting the 5 bulb light attachments (individual switches ) over the single bulb . I always think buy more than you need as you always end up wanting it.

Sounds like continuous lighting .. good for video, but not so good (I find) for photography .. I have a set up with 8 large bulbs and they barely put out enough light ... My strobes are great though and give a much nicer look ..

Do anything you can to use natural light or get a reflector

I have continuous lighting but never use it.

A speed light is more useful

Speed lights (TTL) with triggers and soft boxes would be the way I would go.

Mainly use natural light but TTL speed lights are far better than static in my opinion.

I shoot canon and use Godox speed lights.

Strictly an amateur here, but I love learning about photography.

Due to some people I know, I get to shoot a lot of gigs for fun - really enjoyed learning how to cope in low light with no flash.

I’m actually buying a basic external flash soon though, as there are some occasions when I can use it and would like the flexibility it affords.

I went to a Townhouse event - it was good fun. I probably had the least clue and least kit out if anyone there (just a cheap dSLR and a couple of lenses). They were nice people though and are using a photo I took in their publicity for a forthcoming event .

To learn more, I find the B&H channel on YouTube very good.

because in manual you have to set shutter and aperture - in AP with auto iso I can set the ratio of shutter to focal length, then I only have to set the aperture - camera takes care of everything else - handy when you bed to be quick
