Oh right...ok.

Sex is various things.

Power, pleasure, control, revenge, love, hatred, a weapon and many more.

The reasons we do it are as above plus continuation of the species.

This is not outside the box, it's a question for google or a primary school class.

If sex didn't exist we wouldn't as a species. The only reason it feels good is so that we keep pro-creating. People get addicted to it because of the endorphins released during and after.

"I bet most people can’t explain this"

Sex is the biological characteristics of the male and female of a species.

We don't do sex, though we perform sexual activities.

If sex didn't exist there would have to be another way to procreate. E.g. women laying eggs and men fertilising them like fish do. This would mean we would no longer be mammals though.

How is it? People treat it as power, or to manipulate etc. But the only reason they can is because of the other person's desire to mate with them or pro-create. Besides, none of the ways people use sex as a tool changes what it is or why we do it

"

It was more of a psychological question.. "

Of course it was, duh!!

People have sex for a myriad of reasons - hormonal, phsychological, emotional.

I think that's a lot of where the problems arise in male vs female 'why can't I just get an easy shag' threads too.

Women are more hard wired for the social, relational side of life to be paramount, men are more hard wired to be driven by physical or topical imperatives.

Sometimes we all just get horny off our own bat - I would say that was mostly hormonal. Sometimes it is pure lust inspired by contact with someone you find extremely sexually attractive.

Often sex is a release, of all kinds of tension - I know I am someone who holds some kinds of tension sexually and then I get a strong drive to seek relief, or a strong emotional release during sex.

Others will be starved of physical intimacy or affection or attention or approval so they seek sex to provide that which they lack in their lives. Sometimes you can see sexual activity as an expression of some fairly extreme psychological damage.

It's when you get a mismatch of drives that I think tensions can arise, especially if people don't realise why they are doing what they are doing in the first place.

Interesting point of view.

I heard that we're tribal and none of us are supposed to be monogamous. Within a small tribe, if no one know whose children are theirs then everyone looks after each other. In a way it explains our natural desire to shag other people even when in a relationship and also why we have such a need to protect our family

Great question! Sex is about deep emotional bonding with other people first of all, and reproduction second. Otherwise we wouldn't have sex countless times and yet only have a few (if any!) children as a 'result'.

Based on your comment which is also a fact, reproduction accounts to only 0.0000000000001 percent of the sex we have.. to all the biology teachers ‘ in your face’

We were and are tribal by nature. There's no way of knowing if tribes were monogamous or not. The theory that everyone would look after each others children because they didn't know whose they were is flawed because the mother would always be known. There would also have been benefits to knowing which children were yours as a father when it came to shortages of food, times of danger etc. There is also the problem of weakening the genetic stock of the tribe if nobody knows who they're related to.

An expression of love and affection.

In some cases, an expression of power over or submission to others.

Satisfying a need for intimacy.

A release of tension.

An escape from the outside world,a retreat into our own little cocoon of pleasure.Transport to a form of Nirvana.

Fear of our own mortality, the only way to be re incarnated or to live on is through our children.

I heard that we're tribal and none of us are supposed to be monogamous. Within a small tribe, if no one know whose children are theirs then everyone looks after each other. In a way it explains our natural desire to shag other people even when in a relationship and also why we have such a need to protect our family

I think that's a bullshit excuse myself lol, plenty of animals mate for life, and the vast majority of humans do to - happily, willingly. I don't know why people here can't just say 'Mea Culpa, I just want to shag around cos I can'!!"

Plenty of animals do mate for life but we don't. Yes some people do but it is very rare that people stick with the first person they've ever mated with. And even those people that do still have the natural urges to shag those they find attractive. Why porn and sexual imagery is so powerful. You need to be more objective and not see it as a negative to look at what your body craves and why

It was more of a psychological question..

There is also the problem of weakening the genetic stock of the tribe if nobody knows who they're related to."

The theory is based on the testing of DNA of bones. They found that all sorts of mixes existed. Even with Neanderthals so we were shagging other species never mind each other.

It's not flawed because the fathers are the protectors and they won't know. And there are no benefits to knowing whose children are yours from what you say. If there was food it would be shared with everyone. Maintaining that tribe as a whole and making them stronger. meaning other tribes cannot take their land or resources because there are more of them. This comes from really old tribes when we were hunter gatherers for thousands of years

I am totally objective - objective enough to know I crave monogamy and why. I don't even find porn in the slightest bit interesting, I find it unattractive and fake, I have no need of it and it has no power over me. You need to open your mind to the fact that many people, maybe even the majority, are not the same as you.

You're assuming that old tribes haven't made any social changes in those thousands of years. It can only ever be theory based on assumption from the very little evidence left by ancient hunter gatherers. Nobody knows for sure if they were monogamous or not.

Incidentally current theory suggests that Hunter gatherer tribes never grew to be larger than a certain size because their lifestyle wouldn't support it, too many children were an encumbrance and it's suggested that they practiced prolonged breast feeding, abstinence or abortion as ways to avoid having another baby while they still had a toddler. They had no land as we understand it but might have maintained a territory.

As I say that's only theory, it's unlikely we'll ever know the facts.

Ha! Why do over half of marriages end in divorce then? You speak like i have stated which side I support. I find it all interesting so don't say I think a certain way just because I'm trying to objectively look at our body's urges.

If you say you are never attracted to other people you are a liar. To say you don't act on it, for whatever reason is fair enough, but to say that you don't have the urges is delusional. I'm looking at why we have these urges. Not picking a side and then trying to defend it

The break down of the family unit and marriage is a modern phenomenon and a hugely complex sociological issue and has very little with us suddenly becoming 'true to our nature' after thousands of years of suppression.

Humans have been pair-bonding for life perfectly successfully for thousands of years the world over, they still do in many cultures, that is beyond dispute.

Of course it has become the modern western way to 'try before you buy', and I participate fully in that ethos, but the fact remains that the vast majority of even horny young men in a free society eventually find that actually they'd like to settle down with one person.

Recognising people as attractive, even admiring their attributes, is very different from lusting after them, fantasising about them, or actually taking steps to connect with them when you are already in a relationship.

Being in love precludes that to start with but long term, to my mind commitment is the difference. When I was young, and uncommitted, I did sometimes decide I wanted to be with someone else whilst in a relationship. I left person a to be with person b.

Once committed, that did not even enter my head, no, I did not lust after anyone else, ever.
