I hate the word "Party" being abused in the land of the Swingers. Lets look at what it means. According to Wiktionary (the Wiki Dictionary) the most relevant definition of a party is "A social gathering for entertainment and fun."
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/party#English
So I just wish that people would decide on if they are having a social gathering, which they would finance themselves, like you would a wedding reception, or if they are indeed running a business, in which case say so clearly in advance, and don't pull the wool over people's eyes.

Have hosted many house parties over the last few years, spent a small fortune on food, soft drinks etc, was told by a few that I should ask for a donation towards the food, but I never did, as I didn't have them to make money, I had them because I enjoyed socialising with my friends and it was the only chance I ever got to be able to drink.. lol.. always had to drive if I went anywhere...

we have hosted a couple of house parties and will be again very soon , we never ask anyone to contribute anything apart from the normal byob ,although we do have variety of drinks for general consumption, we do normaly put some nibbles on with maybe a curry or chilli or something for those with the munchies , all we ask is they bring their drinks a sense of humour and party head lol |

Depends on the house and numbers.
If its a big house and 100 people are attending, a small contribution is reasonable.
If its a three up three down, and there's no nibbles, are speech bubble would be something like: WTF? |

Suggest you stick to your 100-person London mansion then, whilst the rest of the country comes up with speech bubbles, something like "WTF" at the derogatory tone of your reply. I think that you'll find that those of us that live in the shires take pride in what we do, lay on a decent spread, and have a lot of fun with like minded people, without any pretentions about the size of our houses being the most important feature of the night. |

Personally I think it absolutely bad form, bad manners and extremely poor social etiquette, to even suggest to your guests that they contribute financially to the evening. I'm all for the bring your own meat to a barbecue, bring your own wine to a dinner party, and bring your own condoms and drink to a swingers party. I absolutely draw the line at paying or having some one pay me to host a party. It just turns what for me is a sociable and recreational pleasure, into some form of prostitution.
However if you are going to hire a venue and get in caterers for a specific organised function, on the lines of a theme or such and and are offering tickets/ limited invitations say, that might be another issue, as you will be providing a service function with cost implications. BUT for a private venue at someones home...don't be so rude! |

Did you read something I didn't? Just sounds to me like they were saying, if it is a very large party then a charge is acceptable. If it is just a cosy party for 6/8, then as most have already said, no charge! The "WTF" comment was aimed at those charging for those small parties with no extras laid on as posted above!
Not really the way to answer. Perhaps a chill pill would be in order? |

Every house party I've been to has been absolutely free of charge, it was just a case of byob (bring your own blobs). Most who went to these were driving anyway with them being out in the sticks so just had one can or glass of wine or just soft drinks, which the host graciously provided, along with nibbles. If I had a party at mine I wouldn't charge for bugger all, be it food, drink or even parking for all the cars on my drive, I'd just ask that everyone bring their own condoms, with bottles at the guests discretion.
I think its obvious for the "party" you attended OP, that the woman was a prostitute and the money was to pay for her own services, the sheets getting a wash (unless all the deeds were done on a fucked mattress on the landing floor, I hope this wasn't the case) and for the newly-minted host to count while he wanked himself silly over how easy it is to make a pile of loot nowadays. Recession my arse, haha. Stay well clear mate, and like others have said, if the organisers are on here, block and report. |

myself and ex partner used to have parties. we provided the food and some drink but asked people to bring a bottle. even did breakfast the next day for the many who stayed. wouldnt dream of asking people for money
i have been to a few parties in manchester where an apartment has been rented. we all contributed towards the cost of the apartment and food, but took our own drink. that is not as bad when the accomodation has been hired specifically for the evening.
what the OP describes is in fact prostitution |

Experience has shown me that those who protest about contributions towards costs hinting at brothels or prostitution are probably the kind of people who would never consider throwing a party as its to much hard work. With all that food to cook and prep, the house to clean and get ready, let alone all that meeting and greeting, making sure that people are happy, changing beds when they are soiled not to mention all that cleaning after people have gone home.
If a host has taken the hours and hours of time that it takes to read peoples profiles to try and make sure that all those coming to the party are compatible.
(Over half of those who confirm that they are coming will let you down without so much as an apology, and will still expect to be invited to the next party).
Then, to entertain in a clean home, provide good food, great company, create a great atmosphere by constantly making sure that people are happy and relaxed and introduced. Then to make sure that all those staying over have a good nights sleep and breakfast in the morning if they want it. Followed by hours and hours of cleaning up, cleaning carpets that have drink spilled on them, washing the dirty linen and often repairing the damage done to the home and contents.
Would we pay to go to such a well run party? You bet your life we would. Do we go to venues/clubs/house parties where the house is unclean or where the proprietor is only interested in parting you from you money and not so interested in making sure that you have a good safe and enjoyable time? You can bet your life we don't.
Too many people in here are happy to call those who ask for contributions toward parties prostitutes or pimps and describe their parties as brothels. And yet so many of them have been seen to pay to enter a house party.
If you don't want to pay then don't but don't wax lyrical in here making out your some kind of whiter than white swinger. |

Personally I don't wax lyrical about people who charge for house parties being pimps and prostitutes. I just looked at the evidence the OP gave. A "party" with one woman, blokes just coming and going in a procession therefore no effort made at guest list or making people were "compatable", no nibbles or drinks to prepare either and one bed to clean the sheets from I think I smell a business venture don't you? Therefore pimp and quite possibly prostitute.
I merely compared it with the excellent parties I had attended in order to make clear how vastly different (in terms of being set up as a cash cow) the party was that this lad was invited to, and to reassure him that the swinging lifestyle can be much more fun than the sorry excuse for a party he attended. At least if it had been advertised as a gang bang then fair play, though still a profitable one! But a party? Bollocks. |

It sounds more like you shouldn't be giving a party if you hate doing it that much. I rarely give parties because I don't have a very big house, but my parents gave legendary parties in the 70s, with people coming and going through the afernoon and well into the night. As kids we used to watch at the top of the stairs, then eat all the leftovers for breakfast. And they didn't charge a penny.
So I guess you charge for your parties then. Thats good to know. |

Ohh we throw parties because we love people to enjoy themselves, and we do throw extremely good parties. But I do take exception to users who diss those who ask for a contribution. Yes the description the OP gave does sound like the organiser was out to make money, but not all parties that ask for contributions are like that! |

At the time, no. It was only years after that my mother told me that they and the other couples in the village did bona fide carkeys-in-the-bowl swinging parties. But the house parties were just booze and food. |
