Why do people comment on subjects that do not interest them? Are they that bored or desperate for attention?

For example, the topic could be, "I like eating apples. So else like eating apples?" Guaranteed someone will pipe up with something like "Apples are nasty. Much prefer oranges." Um...well...how about ignoring and starting a thread on oranges? Radical I know!

Feel free to comment if you have absolutely no interest whatsoever in this subject.

I think the point is when someone posts something like "I am a man who likes dressing up in twin sets and pearls, anyone else into that?" and someone. Responds with "not something I am into".
