We didn't even bother. I've (MJ) read the books. (Well I needed to know what the fuss was about). All they made me want to do was get my red pen out, correct the grammar and send the author a thesaurus. |

I watched it when it first came out. Wish I hadn't bothered. So much hype, it was as sexy as a pair of greying y fronts!
And they definitely have no idea about the lifestyle. BDSM is much hotter than they portrayed on screen. |

My take is 50 SOG is not a lifestyle manual of BDSM but a particular fantasy. Commenting that it does not represent real bdsm is like commenting Lynda Laplante does not know real gangsters. Personally I found the Secretary creepy, an older man hitting on younger secretary in more ways than one.
However the issue is that different people react differently to these plots and presentations. So each individual reaction is valid. But a number of the comments, I would suggest, fail to take into account that 50 SOG touched emotionally many ordinary women not previously involved in bdsm or the bdsm lifestyle, by validating their desires and fantasies. In my mind that is a good thing, in spite of the excruciating prose.

I laughed all the way through them. Thought they were both garbage. However after both the films, as soon as we got back to the car I had an amazing bj between the cinema and the hotel (paid a fortune for as hadn't booked it, but totally worth it...)

Nah. Read the books and want to remove the part of my brain that remembers that atrocity.
That's time in my life I'll never get back. I wouldn't watch the movie. Already wasted my valuable time on finishing those books. I'm a book nerd and can't begin a series and not finish it even if it is awful.

to be fair when the book and subsequent film came out a lot of the bdsm community had the issue that they felt this book/film showed mostly abuse and mental bullying rather than bdsm. So perhaps that's what the poster meant.
