It's sometimes used by people who are for want of a better term "Are up there own arses" sometimes others just mean they work for a living. Means nothing but if matched with the " quantity not quality", "we have a life outside of fab" brigade then best avoided
It's all in the overall context of the profile x |

It's what some couples use to define themselves and keep the peasents away.
I feel totally neutral on it, doesn't bother me either way, if they describe themselves as professional or not |

No a checkout scanner is not a professional, sorry if that gives you an inferiority complex but language becomes obsolete when we have to change the meaning of words every time they might hurt somebodies feelings. |

We all know what we mean if we say professional, it's not a stigma or boast. We are what we'd like to think as professional in our careers, but that doesn't mean we're up our own arses. |

Exactly, stating you are professional doesn't mean you are any more up-your-own-arse than people who object to it are insecure. |

The outrage that people using the adjective 'professional' on a profile causes never ceases to amaze me.
Often it's inverted snobbery but like anything else on a profile surely people can pass profiles by if they don't like what they read.
To be honest it seems a pretty effective filter to me |

Agreed and if you refer to our original post we think it's only when used with other certain phrases such as "quality over quantity" etc where you can see an egotistical pattern emerging and we avoid those people x |

I think it's very unpleasant to describe someone one doesn't know as 'up their own arse' purely because they describe themselves in a certain way. Someone who describes themselves as 'professional' is not looking down on anyone, is not hurting anyone, is not excluding anyone, is not being disrespectful or nasty to anyone. Yet someone saying 'you are up your own arse' when they don't even know them' - well that's just a truly horrible thing to say to someone.

I'm with you on this. I think the sweeping generalisations about people who use the word being stuck up is ridiculous but if that is your experience just pass the profile by. We avoid ones with drug references as we like our playmates to come with informed consent but don't feel the need to be rude about those profiles. |

To me a professional has always meant that the person has undergone further qualifications or ratification in their chosen field by their peers or a professional body such as Institute of Engineers/Architects that sort of thing. |
