Got loads of unread sent messages. Do they remain unread if deleted without reading?

Send me a message and I'll delete it unread and you can see what happens to it in your sent box.

4-5 years ago if you deleted unread it said in your sent box deleted unread. These days though it just says deleted I guess they changed it to stop frustration with some people and reduce aggressive outbursts.
