Call it laziness if you like but shouldn't it be considered a "starter", in the same way a smile or hello to someone you see in real life?
And for those who don't like winks how many happily put flirty emoji etc on the end of posts? |

We like to send winks as an invitation to look over our profile to see if there's enough initial mutual attraction to advance to messages and potentially more |

I ignore all winks as I think it's lazy. The majority have no profile or pics so I'm hardly going to wink back. I'd like to be able to turn winks off permanently |

Winks aren't rocket science. Surely they just mean "hey I like your, profile check out mine"? I can't think of any other reason for winking. ..although I have been known to wink those that rant about receiving them just to amuse myself |

And I might even add sending them just to confuse those that are easily confused. .. |

"Maybe there should be a variation to winks, the ability to add an emoji as an example. At the moment, it sounds like we have to guess the reason."
No need to guess, if they're winking at you it means they like you.
If they just liked your photos they'd just fab. Just think of it like this:
A fab is a wink for photos
A wink is a fab for profiles.
Unless I'm mistaken? |

We send winks. Call it lazy if you want. We use it as an ice breaker, and if people like what they see then we're more than happy to send a long non-lazy message. Our profile is very informative, so don't really see the point in repeating ourselves just to prove we're not lazy. We nearly always get a message in response to a wink, so works for us. On the occasions that we haven't had a response to a wink, we assume we are not what they are looking for at that moment in time. |

Winks just seem to be a source of irritation for me.
I get the concept of them but the people that send them to me seem to have their own idea of how they work.
I have lost track of the number of times in the past where I have received a wink, looked at the profile and felt there was something. I then bother to send a message, usually a decent one only to find it deleted or even myself blocked in some cases.
Yesterday I got winked by two couples where I had been through this before. Thank god for private notes |

I have the same thing. Winks are great to see if there is mutual interest. But when I get a wink then email and like you, put some effort into it, to get nothing back is baffling! |

"What are people's reasons for sending winks? We're intrigued, especially if the other person is hundreds of miles away."
Because they dont really think about it.
They just go through profiles winking as they go hoping for a response.
Doesnt mean anymore than that.
Bit like cut and paste messages they send out to anyone |

To say they may be interested take a look, to say they like your profile and then fab your pic . Just remember they may be 100's miles away but they may also be in your area for many reason weekend away, some type of club gathering as an example we travel uk wide with our classic car groups |
Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote

We use it as an icebreaker, for instance if we are visiting a club, we will wink a few profiles of people planning on visiting the club, just with a view to starting a little bit of conversation to get to know people as we don't know many yet.

"If the person is miles away i so I sometimes just to let people know i like their profile . Yes i can the pics x i suppose it is lazy."
"Depends on the winker. Some do it to show interest, others do it to show appreciation."
These are the correct answers. I send 2 or 3 winks out noe and then but usually to people on friends list too just to let em know O in the mood
I freely admit it's lazy, sometimes I don't always want to start off a full blown conversation, fucking sue me. It's sometime s a quick way to see if they're interested after checking you out too.
I'm starting to use it more and more. |

I've never used them, I never will. Always delete them without looking who sends them.
I would hope, and certainly the person I'm most likely to be attracted to would simply message me expressing an interest. |

Personally as it's any easy way to see whether or not your advances will be welcomed, there are so many ladies or couples on here that complain that a single man isn't what they seek, yet there profiles are pretty unambiguous, so a wink is a good way to see if they would like to chat. |
Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote

This is not me throwing a negative aspect on this, but is that button not there for a reason, maybe it was suggested as a lighthearted ice breaker a while back similar to other forum suggestions you see.
Personally from me I see it as the fact that women/cpls I like must get swamped by messages, so it's just a polite hello, I like what I've read and seen in your profile and if they respond then we're off and onto the next stage of communication. |
Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote

I use winks a lot , it's just a way to say I like what I read in the profile and see in the photos. If a profile makes me smile then I like to let that person know and I would hope it would give them a boost to know poeple like what they read and see. It's just adding to the fun |

I wink to show I've seen something of interest in the profile, but if I'm winking and not emailing.. It's because I'm not sure enough that I'll be of interest
If i get a wink back, I'll message... And the same with those that wink me... I'll look at their profiles and wink back, or not.

I usually send a wink firstly to say I like the profile and secondly so they can have a look at mines. If a get a wink back or see that you've looked at my profile I'll then send an introductory hello message.
I see the wink as the same as a "smile across the bar" or a "cheeky hello how are"
Don't understand why some think it's lazy. Get over yourselves... lol |

I kinda like winks it's not lazy to send someone a wink at all just shows you that they've actually looked at your profile and like what they see and if they get a wink back shows there's a mutual interest to start talking ... mainly for the guys who are either a bit shy or had they're messages ignored so feel what's the point ..I however will send a wink followed up by a message |

I hope this regenerates this thread!
So I've had a wink off a certain guy I've had my "eye on"...
He's looked at me a few times. Fabbed a pic. Then today I have a wink!
So I send him a message. Something simple, like an acknowledgement.
He's read it........and that's it. Not deleted. Just lingering there. Have been online since ( it was a few hrs ago). I'm confused |

This is exactly what we do. Any winks sent are ignored as we get so many and ANYONE that sends friend requests without talking gets ignored.

Nothing wrong with a wink, just a hello, we maybe interested in knowing more, kinda thing
Frankly though when you get a wink from 100+ miles away you wonder why, supposse you could get into a conversation along the lines of " You are a fair distance away, but we are sure we can sort something" knowing full well nothing will come of it, it passes the time..... |

I prefer a wink to a friend request with no messaging first. I'll quite often reply to a wink with 'thanks for the wink' or a few fabbed pics - but a 'cold call' friend invite doesn't deserve any response apart from maybe block! What's appealing about someone with no communication skills? |

I don't see a problem with winks, I like to give and receive.
I feel that it's sometimes less intrusive to send someone you like the look of a wink rather than a message. Each to their own, you'll never please everyone all of the time

I used to take the view that they were intended to indicate interest, but on.my time here I have found that there seems to be a lot of different reasons and that the readon I might have sent a wink to someone might be different to why someone might send me one.
What is perhaps somewhat frustrating is when someone sends you a wink and you respond with a message which ends up being completely ignored.
More recently I have reigned in my use of winks, restricting them to profiles that I find that I might be interested in but need more information to go on in order to compose an appropriate message.
I've now reached the point, however, as many others have, where I will no longer respond to winks and am no longer sending any myself |

"What are people's reasons for sending winks? We're intrigued, especially if the other person is hundreds of miles away."
I suppose a light hearted call for attention. To judge mutral interest before they invest too much.
As to winks from a far I guess its about attracting attention and making online friends rather that any serious intention to meet. After all some people like the online socialising and meeting sexy likeminded people aspect of Fab. I have had a couple of winks from people 100s miles away. I am fine with it and it's rather faltering. |

A wink is like an eye contact in a bar. If it's mutual, I can move to a conversation.
Way less intrusive that starting a chat straight away.
Obviously, when people don't check winks or deem them as lazy, the opportunity to utilise winks is lost.
Distance isn't always a problem. People travel so someone from Cornwall may wink to a profile in Inverness as a first point of contact for a potential future meet. |

I actully wonder to the hostily on here towards winks? I have seen many profiles saying winks will be ignored (or words to that effect). But as someone else has pointed out it's like making initial contact across the bar. I know people who will look at the profile of someone who has sent them a message before they read the actual message. Therefore if the OP is not what their looking for they delete without reading. That must be frustrating if someone has put a lot of time and effort into a mesaage. Surely sending a wink is a far better way to judge mutual attraction and would save the workload on the inbox? |

I use them to gauge interest. A simple wink back and I will message them.
It does become rather soul destroying putting in the effort to read and understand someone's profile, construct a friendly, appropriate message and then see it either deleted or left unread.
Sending a wink simplifies this process somewhat for me x |
