Blokes tend to just be happy someone sent them a message...
But unless the profile says "no bullshit just fuck me and go" then I don't do short messages.
That first im should be enough to make them want to look at you.
I've "friends" on here and elsewhere where a simple "kettle on knickers off" im is enough, but that's from knowing them a while and knowing exactly what the other person wants.

Usually, I comment in something that I'm attracted to or interested in from their profile/photos and/or something they said on their updates/forum. I like to describe what I'm into etc etc |
