It's an abbreviation for the word 'and'.
You can probably make it show up if you use the ASCII code but you'd be quicker just typing the word. |

Its because people use '&' instead of 'and'
Sometimes the system doesn't understand '&' and it shows as '&'  |

I believe it was a deliberate fault introduced to the profiles software so that if ever there was a lull in the forums someone could ask a question about ampersands and & to liven things up again. |
