Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas

I've always said and seen printed in cards that it's a "Merry Christmas and a happy New Year", as per the carol.

Is wishing people a happy Christmas a regional thing?

I'm not being a grinch, just curious.

I mostly always put /say happy Christmas. ..merry Christmas suggests to me that alcohol would be involved and although not a bad thing I tend to reserve a merry Christmas to my adult friends

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Merry Christmas most definitely

I don't need alcohol to be merry.. Might help on occasions though
