If you don't get it back you don't have much in the way of a dilemma - you get a new phone and start again.
In the meantime, just in case it happens again, it might be worth getting into the habit of passwording access to the phone anytime it's not actually being used. |

I lost my phone too. I called my network provider, they put a block on the sim card and the phone too, as much as anyone can do I think. They then issued me with a new sim card using same mobile number. |

I know I'm making an assumption here but I take it it's technically possible to back up the contents of the phone onto a domestic computer
That'd be another good habit to get into. |

"From what I was advised, phone lock means nothing as lots of places can unlock and sim card can be put in another phone."
no...
if you unlock a phone it means that you can then put any network into it - old phones used to only take one network from a sim card.
if someone put my sim into another phone they would get a pin request, if they managed to get past that then they might get the odd phone number but all my phone content is on my phone.
by locking my phone i meant that after 5 seconds of not being used my iphone goes to sleep and the next time i go to use it i have to put a pin in - the same was as a laptop does if you put a password request on after the screensaver - used in a lot of offices?
But basically this is just to stop random people from accessing my phone or getting into my ebay app an ordering loads of shit.
if you're really worried about someone going to all that bother to get in past a pin code just to read your texts...
maybe you should just leave your mobile in the house...

That's one of the reasons we have IPhones... If you have lost your phone, you can lock it, send a message to be displayed on the lock screen or even wipe the whole phone! And you can use your pc to see where it is |

I have no stats to prove this but I guess most phones are 'misplaced' in circumstances where the owner doesn't realise it's gone until whatever damage CAN be done HAS been done. |

If it's a smartphOne like the iPhone for example get picvault. Encripts all 'your eyes only' pictures. Need another pin to access that even if the phone gets unlocked.
Store contacts (numbers and emails) on sim then if phone goes missing. Service provider can kill the sim.
Don't ever have auto login selected on websites.
Do a complete backup to pc once a month.
When you get new phone load the backup and you are pretty much where you started.
That's about as secure as you can be I think....
