"It works both ways here. I would venture to say that a large number of "Leave" voters are not small minded, jingoistic, xenophobes but are people who actually distrust what the EU has become. Sure, there may have been some good things that the EU has done but there are also a lot of things that are not what we signed up for. It was not an especially easy decision. It seems that the "remain" camp, on the whole, have a position where they are convinced they are right and that anyone who disagrees is an idiot and wrong. The remain side blew the campaign by not understanding the depth of feeling. The EU needs to change. Perhaps it needed someone to stand up and force the issue. We may have drawn that straw. It is possible that some other member nations will follow. There is little to be gained here by this nation turning on itself - instead we need to work together to ensure that as a nation we can make this decision work. Whichever way people voted, I respect your decision. It was, most likely, made with what you felt was the right decision for the long term stability and prosperity of this country as well as the wider European community. This is not Armageddon. Things may be a bit bumpy for a while but let's see how things develop over the next year or two. I suspect we will end up paying similar sums of money in return for access to the free market in Europe but with out any say in the future direction of the EU as a whole. And we will still need to accept free movement of people in Europe as it's also a basic tenet of the overall model. So fewer benefits in return for the same costs In my job that would be a sackable offence | |||
