Visits to the GUM clinic and reality checks .

When you visit the GUM clinic and start thinking about the various diseases \ infections which you can catch do you ever wonder if the pleasure is worth tbe risks undertaken. ?
In theory if condoms are always used , the risks should be substantially reduced .
However condoms can slip off or you may be ready to enter when the lady asks you to remove it . If you are fully excited you may not be in the best position to carry out a risk assessment .
Whilst I always insist on condoms for the first few meetings a number of ladies whom I see want regularly it without.
When you are answering the various questions in the GUM clinic , you start to think about occasions such as these .
When you get the text message saying no further action necessay you are then relieved . |

The majority of STD's can be spread through oral sex anyway, most people forget that. Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, can all spread orally and the results are usually far worse. |

Good advice but I have a number of ladies whom I see regularly and some have asked me to take them off .
If you are full excited and stimulated and the lady has given you a great time previously with condoms on , it is not alway so easy to insist that they are used . |

Also the ones who don't get checked regularly, many STIs can be incubating at the time of a test and slip through.
Regular tests are the safest course of action as anything that has slipped through the original test will be caught at the next test and so on.
Testing is not like a cars MoT once a year and forget it should be regular |

Why worse? But yes, I ask for throat swabs when I go, they don't always do them automatically.

Not really, the antibiotics im on mean it would be almost impossible for me to catch chlamydia or syphilis so thats a bit less of a worry.
But no the chances of catching something untreatable when using condoms and common sense is very low.
Clinic trips aren't really awkward or a hassle it's just 10-15 mins out of your day.
The nhs neess to invest more in them though most are terrible they need to be more like larger versions of dean street expreas walk in do tests out the door quickly and easily withh no stigma

I take minimal risk but get a level 3 check every 12 weeks regardless.
I actually went yesterday and had a really bad experience. I had to argue to get a throat swab and physical check. She said I shouldn't go every 12 weeks but every 24. She even said... 'Don't you think you're being a bit paranoid?'
My usual clinic are lovely and offer a full check each time. |

Yes, I'm very lucky in that i have a semi-rural clinic in a lovely old victorian house to go to, it's always nearly empty when I go in the day and they are all absolutely delightful in there.  |

Yes it does make us worry. Not so much about ourselves as we know the risk and you minimise them but also accept them.
The major worry for us would be getting something lethal that would leave our kids without parents. We know it's very remote. But it is the only concern that crosses my mind whilst we wait for any results.
We'd love to swing more but we are keeping it to a minimum until the kids are old enough for us to be sure they will be OK.
That may sound over dramatic but it is the thought processes we have been through. |

The clinic in Wircester is brilliant....go regular,y. I'm basically on first name terms with a few of the staff there. No stigma, no embarrassment...everyone should go regularly! |

No STD`s are lethal these days. They may cause a bit of aggro, but non are deadly. Even HIV is treatable, no cure though. |

I got turned away at one clinic because they only offer level 2 testing. That was a family planning clinic. They said that someone with a swinging/fet lifestyle needs a level three which can only be given at GUM.
I get bloods, urine, throat/vaginal/anal swab and also a physical exam. They also do the microbiology test so like BV/Trich and I get the results there and then for that. St Helens offers all of that as soon as you say you're on the scene but Halton you have to argue for each test. |

We use Chester and they have been lovely. We even had our hep B jabs as they suggested we would be at more risk. It's silly how some clinics you need to argue to get certain tests, you would think they would appreciate your honest and open approach rather than budgets. Surely it's cheaper to test than treat  |

Yeah St Helens gave me Hep B jabs too. I got given dental dam without asking. They said it is expense compared to condoms but if you want to use it, we will happily supply. Didn't even get offered condoms yesterday at Halton. I was really annoyed with them. They have it on file about my lifestyle and all they offered was a vaginal swab. She expected me to leave after that. I was like...'are you not even offering bloods?' |

what can I say, Last Wednesday I made my annual visit to the GUM clinic, no symptom's but want to keep my health checks.
I opted for all checks including HIV, Hep B & C and the other usual's.
.
I received my card and was informed to call in 2 weeks.
.
Out of curiosity I called on Friday and
both Hep B&C were back (Negative)
.
I called again late this afternoon and all results in, all negative and that good feeling when you hear these results
.
What normally takes 2 weeks was done in 3 working days which is fairly good on the health service.
.
I think I will take some months out from fun and enjoy some good food, healthy living and a break from sex.
.
Anyone else had their annual check up and feel good |

As long as you're sensible about how you play the risks are reduced, there's danger in everything we do in our daily lives, from boiling the kettle to driving the car, but you take precautions and reduce the risk, and yes accidents still happen, you scald yourself or you have a collision, does it stop you taking hot drinks, does it stop you you driving? Does it bollocks, if we only do "safe things" you may as well curl up on the floor (not the sofa, you may fall off) cover yourself with a duvet and wait for god, and please don't breathe, the chemicals in the air are so dangerous I wouldn't risk it.
Or we're sensible, and get on and enjoy life. If we all took notice of all the doom and gloom spouted in the forums the Samaritans would be inundated.
I get tested every 4-6 weeks, I'm well aware of the risks of stds but I'm more aware of how boring life is without pleasure |

Also, be careful who you play with.. DYOR and get to know the people.. We would avoid those involved in certain activities and playing with anyone we knew had bareback sex with anyone except their partners would be a no no.. |

I always pack a number 2 pencil with a rubber on the end so there are no mostakes. I never use protection for oral though which can still bring diseases does anyone else? |

I've only ever been offered a simple swab. That's it.
I didn't know there was anything else to do until last year when I started reading the forums.
Last time I went I asked for blood tests too. They weren't happy but did them reluctantly.
It wasn't a pleasant experience, I couldn't understand the nurse and she couldn't understand me and was getting annoyed. The waiting area was packed with teenagers of the chav variety and I was definitely stared at!!
Then I was told if I don't hear anything then I'm clear, which doesn't seem very carefully thought out.
I won't be going back there. |

We go often and can't say we worry as one we are selective who we play with and two we always have safe sex. That's not saying we are risk free but we both free the risks are lower |

I guess it's good people worry about getting their results back. If they did not worry at all, why would they get tested in the first place?
I just make my own personal risk assesment of who I want to use condoms with. It does take some talking through and a lot of trusting if either you of play without with anyone else. |

Shame, definitely try and find a better one, maybe look for one of the ones that also does family planning, they seem to be gentler. I must admit I would far rather go to my GUM clinic than my GP, it is rural clinic in a old victorian house, I can get an appt any time, never have to wait, never more than a couple of other people there, and the staff are all totally charming, it's a very pleasant experience. |

A long time ago my job insisted on my vacination for Hep flavours. Nasty jabs, but it would seem prevention is key to general safety.
Spin on a few years, I'm still having regular medical screening with work and the vacinations I received some 15 years ago are still showing antibodies in blood tests!
Prevention is important and who knows what the future holds... must order that crystal ball on Amazon. |

Tested every month as I do play bareback with selected people. GUM clinic knows me very well, they all know my lifestyle and appreciate me getting tested instead of staying at home. Results don't take too long and always a pleasant experience. |

Agree with the OP that when it comes to getting checked out it does make me think about the risks, but like many I hope that a sensible approach minimises the risks.
I use the clinic in Bordon, near Aldershot, which surprising is not full of squaddies and I have found them to be very professional at all times. |

There are risks with anything in life and as such there are measures not just condoms you can take to minimise the risk.
The biggest thing is getting checked out regularly though as most of the things catchable are treatable and not a problem if dealt with early. Carrying on blindly is putting others at risk not yourself.
However that said your sexual saftey is your responsibility not someone else.

You can't help but be a little worried when you go, but all you can do is apply caution and get regular testing, obviously condoms arnt 100% and oral is a risk but so far all has always be good for us. I also get on great with the nurse and we always have a good chat about what we have been up to |
