If you have mouth sores/ulcers/cuts etc the risk increases greatly. Use common sense (not very common) If you have big doubts then don't do it. If your a little apprehensive then don't go until he ejeculates. If you have huge hang-ups and gives you nightmares then maybe you shouldn't be swinging. It's certainly not 100% safe. But it's 'safer' than BB sex, for example. Moreover, it depends on what you're talking about being safe from - HIV - yes very difficult transmit orally - but other STDs, not so much. |

Not safe dude , people are way to blasé about it for me , with oral I'm tested clean and will only do it with men or woman I know are clean , and even then I still get a test done again , it's a long hall , but it's your health and peace of mind , it only cost you time and you can't put a price on that . |

I'm sure this stuff is all true. But I'm wondering why I have never been advised this when I go for my regular STI check. I was very honest with the sexual health nurse that I am a swinger and go to sex parties, and she gave me professional health advise appropriate to my lifestyle. She did warn me that chlamydia can be transmitted via fingers, so I've taken that into account. She never advised that condoms should be worn for oral sex. |

If you have a crash in a car while wearing a seat belt then your chances of fatality or serious injury is hopefully going to be less than if you took the risk of driving the car without a seat belt.

I think those who are that worried, shouldn't really be active on the swing scene, due to the risk of condoms breaking or falling off (has happened to me). With the risk of the condom failing, I'm sure having protected penetrative sex puts an individual at far greater risk than giving/receiving unprotected oral. Swinging and having multiple partners is a risk, and as with all risky activities in life, we minimise the risks as much as is reasonable to the individual. But there is only one way to cut out the risk completely, and that's not do it at all. Certainly for me, if we start analizing risk on this level, then I would conclude that I can't have penetrative sex because the condom might fall off and I don't want to have oral sex because a condom or dental dam would have to be used. On this basis swinging ceases to be an enjoyable activity. But I do want to swing, so I will do what is reasonable to protect myself and others but still maintain enjoyment, and the rest is a calculated risk. And if that calculated risk is unacceptable to me then I shouldn't be on the swing scene. |

The HIV virus exists in infectious quantities in blood and semen and has to get into the blood stream to infect. Small lesions in the mouth or vagina can be a portal of entry for the virus. Anal sex is far more risky as lining of the rectum is more delicate. I don't know if vaginal lubrication and pre cum contain the virus in infections quantities. |

We've always insisted on double condoms, although after reading this thread, we're thinking of going to defcon 4 and insisting any guy wears three condoms AND removes his socks before we'll go near him. |

The reason why there are no specific statistics for people catch STIs from oral sex alone is because very few people only partake in oral sex.
Oral sex is normally/often a forerunner to other types of sexual activity and so the precise transmission point of any STI is seldom easily discovered.
This allows a false conception that oral sex is safe.
It can however be shown that unprotected oral sex is safer than unprotected vaginal sex which is safer than unprotected anal sex.
No sexual activity is safe but some forms are safer than others

The thing is it is a risk maybe small but there is often no symptoms.
The fact people use condoms mean other areas don't get infected.
As a lot of clinics don't automatically do oral swabs people aren't even aware they have it.

You might think so but sadly no.
It is perfectly possible to catch STIs when using condoms correctly with no failures in the condoms.
Stis such as herpes, HPV, syphilis, pubic lice, or scabies can occur even if a condom is used.
