Paracetamol and codine cause headaches ,my consultant told me ,not to take either on a regular basis,as all you do is feed the headache and it comes back.

Have you tried massage therapy? The amount of tension you hold in your neck and head is shocking.

I suffer with a condition called 'Chronic Cluster Headaches' also known as Suicide Headaches! I've been in and out of neurological hospitals for years now, and unfortunately there is no cure for the condition. I sympathise with anyone who has more than one headache a week, my worst spell was once over a 3 month period, I had over 790 attacks, and I'm gonna be honest I found it that hard to deal with I very nearly confirmed the conditions name sake. If you are visiting a doctor and are finding it difficult to get them understanding what you are going through, I found a website that is superb and can answer a lot of questions you might have. It's called ouchuk

A world of my own

I have very high blood pressure and as a result suffer awful headaches. Often I wake up with them. Unfortunately even the medication to control it causes them to worsen at times. It becomes a vicious circle. I find the migrane cool patches help them a bit but the rest of the time I just have to put up with them. It's exhausting so I really do sympathise with you. I'm sure with all your tests your BP will have been looked at. However if not get it checked

I used to. Then I got referred to the neurologists. Had mri, ct etc. All clear. Then had a lumbar puncture and found the pressure in the fluid around the brain was raised. So put on meds. Have since had another lumbar puncture levels were still high so drained so fluid off. Did the same the first time. I have been diagnosed with something called idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Or Iih. Basically the fluid doesn't drain from around the brain as it's supposed to so the pressure builds up and causes severe headaches. It's prob more common than people realise, but not many people have heard of it. Just thought I'd share.

I went to see the neurologist just last week, and he Said my pressure levels were fine, had visual fields all fine,so i mentioned the glasses i wear ,and said i got them from the pound shop, and his reply was ,as long as you can see through them that's all that matters,as i thought they might be causing the headaches. The only other thing i can think of ,is it could be the phone screen or computer screen as i do spend quite a bit of time on them sometimes.

Ive been getting migranes for many many years. I could usually tell when a migrane was coming on, or when i woke, that i had a migrane, as it was a particular location. it was really crippling too once it set in. Thankfully a few years ago, my (new) dr prescribed me with the right kind of medication to target the migrane. It hasnt stopped me getting them (sometimes clusters) but it does releive the pain swiftly.

I hope either your gp, or some specialists are able to offer you some solutions soon, headaches are .. well .. a real headache x

Specialists are specialists in one field and he should have suggested you ask your doctor to refer you to a eye specialist as eyesight does get worse as you get older and reading glasses need proper assessment as does computer use and lately mobile use.

Buying cheap reading glasses is ok but you will need to be assured they meet your perscription - Also Asda sells cheap glasses next to the contact lens solutions that might be worth buying after you get a proper eye examination.

Good luck X

"Anyone else suffer from daily or weekly headaches? Had tests but nothing wrong, just have to live with them."

The best treatment for headaches is sex, it is not a cure as the headache will come back later but it is a good treatment.

All those ladies who use a headache as an excuse not to have sex are actually turning down the very thing that will relive the symptoms

If your specialist discounted glasses without even suggesting an eye test, told you not to take codeine, found nothing but hasn't offered you anything else to combat the headache I'd ask for a second opinion.

Unless it's just for a few weeks to check for medication overuse.

There are lots of different medications to combat headache, specific pain clinics etc.

You should get your eyes tested to discount that, reduce and hopefully remove caffeine, do exercises to strengthen your muscles (not body building, strengthen core muscles and cardio as that's good to combat headache) and do a food diary to see if there's a correlation between anything and the headache.

Long term sufferer of 15 migraines a month here.

My advice re headaches.........

Drink plenty of water, then drink some more!

When you feel a headache coming on, go for a brisk, stiff walk, to get your circulation pumping! All the stale blood pooled at your extremities can then be replenished by fresh oxygenated blood.

Have a big poo. Yes, really........ don't put off having a really good clearout. And if you are a bit constipated then do something to help like a gentle herbal laxative.

Avoid junk food.

And if you smoke, for goodness sake stop today!

It's true about the painkillers. They can actually cause the headaches if you take them too often. I was told that by the neuros.

"Also any dyslexia or similar conditions? maybe "

Can show up wth reading books and computer use and when stressed as you may have evolved coping strategies - have a look on google for the uk group.

Could always be a combination of things if the headaches are worse after prolonged reading, watching TV or computer or mobile use.

I feel your pain as I am also a chronic cluster head and am currently awaiting approval to have an occipital nerve stimulator implant fitted.

I am under the care of Dr M at the institute of neurology in London who I am sure you have heard of if you have found OUCH.

Pamela,

You say you saw a consultant, was he a neurologist? As a lot of neuro's will openly admit their training for headaches was less than 3 hours. The first few I saw I knew more about my CH than they did and they advised I saw a neuro who specialised in headaches as there are a lot of headache conditions that normal tests will not diagnose.

I used to get lots of headaches and migraines. I get far less now that i have a less stressful life. However when i do get one, if i take painkillers and they dont seem to work i have a drink of something fizzy ( or lemonade or even carbonated water) when i take my painkillers. It always helps me as apparently when you have a migraine and some headaches too your stomach shuts down and therefore the medication isnt absorbed and obviously then doesnt work, however a fizzy drink helps your stomach to work and absord the medication and get rid of the pain. I was told that by my daughters migraine specialist many years ago.

It definetly does help me and is always worth a try

Taking regular painkillers can cause headaches but it doesnt with everyone

I take a variety of regular painkillers but they dont give me headaches.

They react differently with everyone.

My mum suffers with this. Was only picked up at an eye test and she was referred to a Specialist straightaway. Her vision had deteriorated slightly but the medication has paused that and she now has quarterly checks on the pressure build up.

I used to suffer very badly. I stopped smoking, started exercising, had massages/ osteopathic treatment and now get them occasionally.

Also go cold turkey on the painkillers and go to sleep instead of possible

I see the same consultant as yourself, and I'm also waiting for the ONS , but I'm constantly hitting brickwalls with the funding. The powers that be don't seem to want to pay for it. And because of it being such a rare condition it's becoming really difficult. I suggested to Dr M about having it done privately, to which he answered I wouldn't advise going down that route because if anything was to go wrong with the device after the NHS wouldn't fund it. And because of the battery needs to be changed after 5 years or so they wouldn't even pay for that. So you're stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I hope you have more luck than I'm having because the success rate of this operation looks very positive for CH sufferers

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Multiple Headaches / Migraine sufferer here..

I take on times well beyond the dose of pills to keep things at bay.

However they get to a point where I have to do more, I know most of the triggers for mine thankfully. But I still get them.

For me it's a trip to the osteopaths and get my back and neck put back into correct position, almost instant relief.

It's finding the right osteopaths for you, that's the hard part, took me a while.

good luck with your search for what works for you

Well the good news is nhs england are going to approve 50 people to have the ons once they have a couple of new members on Dr M's team so fingers crossed you never know you may get the go ahead if you are one of the lucky 50, knowing my luck I will be one of the other 120 still on the waiting list lol
