It does take practice but I learnt how to do it within a couple of days and I have a terrible gag reflex. (So bad that I have almost thrown up on my dentist on several occasions!!) 
You need to open your throat up and relax, tell yourself that you aint gonna hurl!!
Doing it with your head hanging off the bed or on your knees in front of him are good positions but I found that when learning, the 69 position with you on top is better as his cock will naturally curve down your throat. Get in the right frame of mind and just go for it! You will get further and further every time.
