It's a site scripting issue, the profile had & in the header at some point and has been deleted but it still remains as amp due to the scripting error.

Little bug that's not been ironed out completely

I may be wrong... usually am as I tend to get my facts from QI and Mock The Week, but the & symbol is called an ampersand, hence the amp when there are script issues

It's a glitch in the system when you type & you get extra amps

To display a Web page properly & gets translated into & £ would be £ etc. They decided the site but never fixed it. Reason is that & is a reserved character in html which all Web pages are coded in.
