I've 3 bikes plus new one coming tomorrow

Just like to say to all returning bikers that have been off them for a few years to be careful. Bikes have come a long way since you last had one and modern 600's have more power than a 1,000cc bike of a few years ago. I've had a full licence for nearly 35 years. And never been without a bike, but my R1 at times can scare the absolute shit out of me. Plenty of places where you can hire motorbikes from. Go along and hire a 600 for a weekend. Think you will realise then that they are more than enough

I'm starting to think we missed out, it seems everyone was at number 3's last night! Must've been a busy one.

It was quite nice weather wise, round here today. I even nipped back home to change my jacket as I was too warm (though that wasn't the best idea my leather was a little on the chilli side). Had some fun on a new Yamaha XSR. Think I may have been converted. X

Surely buying lower clip ons will have same effect as it's moves your body weight more over the front

"Nope - anywhere from 12 to 25mm depending on what you do with the front"

++

Nope sorry but personally I would disagree, even if dropping the front more than 10mm at the back is excessive

Have ridden a Bird with 8mm at the back and 2mm drop at the front ( I just have 6mm at the rear) and wouldn't go on the centre stand without a block of wood

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

No it doesn't and is a dangerous misconception.

Raising the rear changes the bikes geometry this transferring the weight forward and making it turn in faster.

Lowering the front does the same.

Lower clip ins only change the riders body position.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

"Nope - anywhere from 12 to 25mm depending on what you do with the front

Surely buying lower clip ons will have same effect as it's moves your body weight more over the front"

+++

Its not so much about changing where the weight is but more about altering the geometry so the bike turns in quicker.

The Bird was designed for high speed stability. Raising the rear/lowering the front improves the tip in at (as you go further up the change range) the expense of high speed stability

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

I wouldn't drop the front at all over 15mm at the rear.

6mm rear and 5mm front is the usual owners forum mod.

Obviously changes bikes geometry with all rake and trail degrees but surely. If this was the way round it Honda would have done it as standard. I don't think changing the bike in that manner you'll see the difference in the bends. I'm more for rider position and trust in the tyres

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Honda built it to be the fastest in a straight line - not on a track. It was made to take the crown from the ZX12R.

Hence the geometry is designed for maximum stability.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

You will see a difference in the bends - fact.

Pop over to the Blackbird forum to see just what they do.

You aren't going to get ZX6R turnability due to the wheelbase BUT it will turn in faster.

How fast is down to what you choose for the ride height and trail/rake with adjustments

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Ok but by getting it to drop in faster does not mean your getting any lower or through the bend any faster.

I've just done 6mm at the back and left the front untouched. Happy enough with that for my daily riding and odd track session

It's a 5-10 minute job to fit one. Bike on centre stand, lift rear of fuel tank, slacken rear suspension top nut off, slide shim in(go from the side it can be a little fiddly) , retighten.

Jaws Motorcycles sell 6mm shims for £6 or you can use appropriate sized washers cut out/make your own from a bit of ally
