We have just politely turned down a guy because he plays bareback. Not a judgement, but it's just not for us.

'Bareback' is listed on the 'Interests' on Fabguys so those that do can more easily be avoided. I appreciate that 'safe sex' suggests this but one person's interpretation of safe sex might not be the same as another's.

It's the singles that insist they only play safe... look at their verifications and look pics of them bareback with obviously identifiable meets...
I think bareback is fraught with some many problems I steer clear, but you do have to investigate thoroughly.

I just see a lot of hypocrisy around bareback. Virtually everyone has done it at some point. Either with a one night stand, or with a partner, or a spouse. But if we are honest about it, most couples dont actually get checked before they ditch the condoms, they just kind of trust that the other person doesnt have anything, and then they carry on without condoms. The vast majority of the time it is fine, and no one catches anything. But on fab forums anyway, it seems that it is 100% certain you will catch something if you ever didn't use a condom. 100% certain the other person has something. 100% certain you will catch it.
I just wish people would be more honest as say, there is only a small chance of catching something, the other person probably doesn't even have anything, but just on the off chance, I prefer to play it safe. That would be honest. Saying its Russian roulette with a 1 in 6 chance of instant death is bullshit. But it gets trotted out every time this topic comes up. |

Wow! Probably one of the most blatantly obvious cases of Slut Shaming I have seen.
I think swinging and Fab should be a place to celebrate sexual empowerment, especially female sexual empowerment, and in my opinion I see no place at all for Slut Shaming within our community.

But if we are honest about it, most couples dont actually get checked before they ditch the condoms, they just kind of trust that the other person doesnt have anything, and then they carry on without condoms. But on fab forums anyway, it seems that it is 100% certain you will catch something if you ever didn't use a condom. 100% certain the other person has something. 100% certain you will catch it.
I just wish people would be more honest as say, there is only a small chance of catching something, the other person probably doesn't even have anything, but just on the off chance, I prefer to play it safe. That would be honest. Saying its Russian roulette with a 1 in 6 chance of instant death is bullshit. But it gets trotted out every time this topic comes up. "

The difficulty is getting any solid stats.
You can get stats on the likelihood of catching a specific disease. ie 50% for women to catch gonorrhoea, but that is only if you know the other person is already infected.
Odds of getting sti's from an unknown encounter do not seem to be as readily available from scientific sources. |

But totally agree with that. I have, before joining FabS (I had a life before FabS and still do outside of it), had unprotected sex with someone who I was seeing on a long-term basis. It was an unsaid and unwritten monogamy; however he could have slept with each and every woman here and I wouldn't have a clue
I have only got tested twice in my life; these were the times when I had unprotected sex and then started having doubts about that person. And I've had unprotected sex with 4 men in my life
It is my body and my health and I take good care of myself because nobody else will. And I feel no need to lie and come up with, "I have never even come in contact with any other human being unless he donned a full body condom". Although I am certain that everybody else on his site has and that the bit of paper signifying a long-term relationship (marriage) can fight STIs better than any full body condom can |

Well there you go spent 10 minutes doing an online test to see my individual odds of getting an sti.
Results?
No odds given just the usual you may want to get tested for x, y and z.
It's not a hard question but finding the actual odds of contracting an sti seem to be hidden or unknown.
The best you can do is rates of infection.
500000 cases of sti's in the UK diagnosed each year.
So on an annual basis that's 1/120 assuming everyone was fucking randomly. But not everyone is also these are diagnosis results, so not the bank of disease within the population.
Ie you can get hiv or herpes, but can't be cleared of it. So those diagnosed this year add to that bank of people, were as other sti's that are diagnosed can be treated and cleared from the population.
But then again these are only from those who have been diagnosed.
So saying it's a small chance is equally as incorrect as saying it's Russian roulette. As until you know the actual odds of a random encounter it's impossible to say. But some back of the envelope calculations would suggest higher than 1/120 odds. |

I find the stunning reassurance that many on here seem to get by turning down a barebacker disturbing
It's like 'thank god I dodged a bullet there' whilst at the same time sleeping with the next guy with a condom who has no bareback photos , but has previously barebacked but that they don't know about
The original person is there sat at home feeling safe whereas in reality there were no safer sleeping with the second person as compared to the first
The reality is to assume everyone you sleep with has barebacked and just accept it, pretending that it doesn't happen is naive, use protection yourself and don't spend ages worrying about the complex sexual histories of others on a swinging site |

Your figures are roughly the same as mine. I agree the odds are probably higher than 1/120, but if its 1/100 or even 1/50, thats only a 1 or 2% chance your play patner has something, and like you say we dont know the transmission rates.
Even if you Do catch something, for example chlamydia (the most common std), its cured with antibiotics, and regular testing means you can catch it early. Obviously you don't want to catch anything, but again if we go back to the Russian roulette analogy, I would much rather have chlamydia, than a bullet to the head.
So I totally get that most people play safe, we play safe, but lets try to not treat people as if they are sub-human if they, on occasion, chose not to. |

I date guys from the real world. The last one I met was at Maplins; he was soooo geeky that I fell for him straight away; that is besides the point
The point is that he didn't have a profile around with or without bareback photographs. I don't think guys in the vanilla world have profiles anywhere which I can check and check the folk who have verified them and then check the folk who have verified him who have verified them
