This guy announces he's leaving and gets laughed outta town (which I get) but others make a big song and dance about the same thing and get a full curtain call and applauded for their services to fab.

I think the difference is time. The sadly departed OP had only been here a week and had had no time to make friends and aquaintances who may have wished him well had he then left after a while.
