I can't see how they'd ever get to a place where mine was needed useful or relevant, so am not worrying about it.

Highly unlikely that any retrospective law would brought in where people's search history turns them into a criminal!

I think there's a greater risk of the stored data being accessed by people that might want to blackmail, like the Ashly Madison case or perhaps TalkTalk.

Even if the legislation is passed, it doesn't mean that anyone will be checking everyone's internet history. It means that everyone's history will be stored so that "in the event of a crime" any person's history could be checked.....

Whilst I have nothing to hide I don't like it. Its a slippery slope. For example it starts off with checking the Internet history of citizens and then keeps going further and further. Reading emails, texts etc and before you know it we'll have no privacy left.

As well as being a kinky bastard, I'm an Antifascist activist and a bit of an anarchist.

These laws could land me in a spot of bother... even if it is just from arranging a peaceful protest or a counter demonstration to muppets like 'Britain First'.

The UK Government needs to be reminded that it is there to serve the people, the people aren't there to serve them.

It is mainly for terror and child protection. They need a court issued warrant first and my understanding is that only sites visited for the reasons of the warrant issue can be prosecuted. Eg if a suspected terrorist was illegally downloading music he couldn't be prosecuted if they had a warrant to search for sites related to terrorism

. How about if one does a potential search on a potential employee and they turn out to be a drug dealer or money launderer ..The police might assume that you are involved just by doing the search . We have a lot to fear if the powers are misused . There are many situations where innocent people could lose their livelihood if the powers are not carefully controlled ..

If their is intelligence on you then your internet is alreadt been monitored. If their;s no intelligence it won;t prevent anything and the laws are already their to recover the browsing history retrospectively.

These laws almost certainly won't stop a single crime or save a single life

Nothing to hide? Stefan Kiszko was tried and convicted - wrongly - of the murder of a young girl. One of the key pieces of "evidence" against him was that he had some soft core porn magazines. That was used in court to portray him as a sex crazed maniac. Imagine how an internet history showing many visits to fab and viewing hard core porn videos would have been used against him

Ultimately it is not only those who do wrong who need to be worried but those who might be suspected of doing wrong - and none of us can be safe from that

It is pointless as it is incredibly easy to hide the briefing history from everyone. I also note most people have no clue of the darker sides of the web and the anonymity offered there for all manner of things which is worrying.

Download torbrowser and your internet history will be safe with a few precautions. With a few more you will be completely safe regardless of whether you are buying drugs or watching videos of kiddy fiddling.

The point is that this is so easy to get round that anyone who would actually have a browsing history that would be interesting to the police would make said history disappear.

Whilst what we are here for may seem perfectly innocent, the computers scanning the stored communications (including our voice packets) could pick out destinations that might be considered anti-social. Malicious governments or their agents could clamp down on these, or if those sites were overseas, implement the Great British Firewall. And don't think for a moment VLAN or The Onion Ring would get around surveillance.

It's possible, I knew of some one that worked for the immigration service, fell out with his ex she went on holiday so he blacklisted her; she couldn't get back in the country. It took weeks before anyone figured out what he had done.

Police and the security services have been checking internet/phone records and calls for a very long time and to think otherwise is very naïve. Its one way that they can stay ahead the game. Cyber terrorism is a real threat to both personal and national security and if you have nothing to hide other than sexual adventures and personal kinks then it shouldn't be a problem. I hardly think they would be interested in your sex lives but it something that the wrong people could use as a tool to blackmail or for extortion.

Although we like to keep this secret from our close friends and like many on here wouldn't want it to be common knowledge. Its something we don't fear.

So as for the police checking phone record etc then let them carry on for the greater good of the nation. They do a great job and without them this country would be in a worst state than it already is.

This new legislation is proposing to tighten the oversight of the access so that they have to explain and justify all access. No longer possible to have a home secretary decide she wants to see something without a panel of judges agreeing.

Preventing bored teenagers accessing third party information and blackmailing people is a separate issue of improving company's security, though their illegal activity would be easier to detect and prosecute using this proposed legislation

Blimey this has been busy since my last posting about if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear and see that i have been castigated and not worthy of life or a point of view

LOL Just because we don't publically execute people anymore that doesn't mean that the powers at be are any less draconian than other world dictatorships.

I recently read a paper on psychological manipulation, and when you look at some of the methodology, you begin to realise just how manipulative the government, or should I say the whitehall mandarins really are.

It makes fascinating reading. Especially how the use of fear is used to maintain control.

You can either take someone and shoot them in public, or you can use terrorist acts, public propaganda through state owned broadcasting companies, aka the BBC. And introduce laws designed to control everything that the public do.

Funny how we still so happily do business with countries which have atrocious human rights records. And yet condemn those of the same vane but are shown to be our enemies.

Even the Human rights act is condemned for favouring criminals, in order for the government to win favour for getting rid of it. News Flash, most of the human rights act is based on British principles. And there is a clause that says it cannot override a criminal act in favour of an individuals human rights for that of a countries own laws.

(m) here - Just reading a msg and thought would look at Forums. I am in Italy and here the laws do not protect you in any way or manner; if a judge finds that you are involved in anything related to crime all your media accounts are open to view.

Germany has had this law since 1998 and they store data for 5 years.

In France by law all data has to be stored for 3 years and has to be transferred upon request of the police.

Switzerland was storing data on people in the 60's all foreign born nationals had a file (being Swiss British my file was 14 pages and when received 13 pages were blacked)

Labour got rid of freedom of speach in the 90's and what now is happening is a knee jerk reaction to the modern world and how communication happens.. But do you all honestly believe that your internet accounts are of interest to police and others? The answer is no as there is one simple factor to all of this "Money"...

To store, sort and make a decision on data costs money - mega bucks not £2.42 ... so even if the new laws to be state that data is to be stored for 1 year that does not mean in anyway or manner that some one will be looking at your data.

The people who it concerns have already vanished into the BlackNet or use untraceable cellphones...

Anyway from what I hear they won't be able to read messages just know what sites they've visited. So they'll know they visited fab but not what they've said so I'm not sure how that will help with the examples given.

hi, collecting meta data has been going on for years , the main programs used today are "tempora " stellarwind and stringray for phone location. as most if not all servers are outside the uk borders, the uk gov can collect / read all data returning to uk . but the amount is huge on a good day around two terabits per second , looking for a needle in a hay stack springs to mind, so dont worry to much unless you use skype for sex.. connie x (ex spy..lol)

If they can check on people when will it stop? I mean imagine 5+ years along applying for a loan and the bank say sorry mr & Mrs smith we can see from your internet history your both swingers and therefore are at risk of catching a sti no loan! Or millions of 15 year old boys getting arrested because their girl friend sent a text saying about how great it was having sex or sending a photo to him.

The government have been on it for years, that's how they get the suspect pedo rings, that's how Pete Townsend got caught.

I love people's response "I have nothing to hide", that is irrelevant, it's your own personal privacy. Which is being invaded by the Government to stop the "terrorists" that they have created and are funding.
