Had a couple of meets lined up were they have pulled out because they are stuck at work or in traffic. Messages sent online on fab not by text but the GPS on their profile clearly places them at home. Does it only correspond with one say laptop, so should be taken lightly, or will it show your location based on whatever youve signed in on?? Thanks |

In the past we have had problems with location services with our mobile. It is almost like it relies on a WiFi connection to establish location. This has mainly been in relation to searching for peaple close by to join us when we are travelling |

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire) |
Posted previous too soon, oops
I think it relies on a mobile signal for the whos near function.
The location marker is the postcode on profiles that you add when you sign up.

"The gps is for the mobile site. The location on the main website is where they said they lived on their profile information. "
I know what I mean is it said home 10 to 15 miles and current location 10 to 15 miles but they were claiming to be 50 or 60 miles away on their mobile! |

No because I dont know how reliable it is or if it works on whichever device your on so didnt want to appear to be accusing if its a gps problem and not dishonesty |

I think , and the emphasis on think, that it works when you both have the mobile site on and who's near switched on. If not it just shows the home base distance. So its possible to actually be in Scotland but show you are in Birmingham because you aren't logged in.
If that makes sense? |

As I understand it, modern GPS (according to the phone info) is accurate to within 5mtrs! Otherwise the Sat Nav we all rely on would be useless!
Only those with "See who's near" turned on will show up, but the within a certain distance has always been quite accurate. We were awaiting some friends who use SWN, and we got a rough idea of how far they were by looking at the app. We knew when they were near the hotel as the SWN showed they were within half a mile. And sure enough, they were!
If this guy said he was stuck in traffic 50 to 60 miles away and it showed him as 15 miles, he bottled the meet was wasn't sharp enough to turn off SWN! |

It doesn't show anyone who is not logged in to the app! I have two "friends" who live within two miles of us and they are not showing. Only those with the app turned on. |

"I know thats a possibility but looking for a more factual response."
Fact.... This is a swingers site. Accuracy of the GPS depends on the device people are using. It's not intended as a tracking tool.

"Isnt it only accurate to with 10 miles?
Within half a mile now."
That's why we don't feel the need to send face-pics before a meet - this feature gets you within shouting distance
Bad luck, OP, I'd just block and move on. Better luck next time.

Thanks thats more helpful and what I was asking. Wasnt trying to "track" anyone just noticed it when they messaged and asked for info on here before jumping to a conclusion. They have asked to rearrange so Im asking to see if its worth a second chance. Had I been told its infalible I wouldnt think about rearranging. |

Yes the GPS is very accurate - I travel a lot and it's always a nice surprise to see fellow fabbers less than a mile away
But it's creepy to use it as a tracking tool
I wouldn't waste your energy on caring why he chose not to meet you OP - NEXT |

Were you looking at their distance on their profile or via the whos near?
I think that unless they have their whos near turned on then the distance on their profile won't be accurate. But if you are checking on their distance via who near then it is pretty accurate.
But saying that unless I clear my location access on my phone from the last time I used it has in the past shown my location as where I was, 100 miles away.

"It was on their profile not whose near.
Then it isn't likely to be accurate, he could easily have been 5 or 50 miles away and you would have no idea."
Thank you thats what I wanted to know |

Yes as I said earlier he asked to postpone not cancel. But if he was blagging us we dont want to spend another evening sat there waiting for him when we could have arranged a meet with somebody else |

Goodness me!! Lets start again...
The distance on the profile is generated by working out the distance between your postal areas. It is a constant unless you change your postal area to search for somewhere you are visiting.
The distance on "See Who's Near" is accurate. The accuracy is dependant on the device, but most smartphones are accurate to within 5 mtrs. If it says within one mile, you can be assu_ed they are definitely in your area and if it say 50 miles away, that is also accurate.
So, if this guy told you he was 50/60 miles away and when you looked on SWN he was 15 miles away (ie, at home) then he was lying! GPS doesn't lie! It is a given. If you had sat nav that was only accurate to within one mile, it would be useless. It would mean that you could be anywhere within a one mile radius of where you actually are.
He was lying! |

As for using it for tracking where a meet is? I see no problem, if we know they are getting close, we can freshen up and get drinks ready etc. It will also catch out those who say they are going to meet, but if they are still 40 miles away at the appointed time, speaks volumes! And yes, it has happened to us! |

If you are on the mobile app it shows home location which was 10 to 15 miles. Then it ALSO has mobile location which according to him should have been 60 odd miles way but it ALSO said 10 to 15 miles. What I was asking is does that show the location from any device your logging in from, or if you regularly use one phone but are using a different one will it show the location of the different one your using at that time. If so he WAS lying as it said his mobile was the same distance as his home. Hope thats clear now lol |

We have found it very accurate as we work all over the country and as we drive up motorways messages from local people pop through. We even had a chat with someone a few miles apart heading up the same road after he saw in the services when his app told him we were close.
We have also spotted a man in a restaurant at the next table shown as within quarter of a mile. Shame he was single and examining the site whilst eating opposite his very pregnant girlfriend lol |

The mobile who's near claims people are a quarter mile away here in London town. Would love to test the accuracy with someone lol. Also would love the accuracy to tell me if someone in the same train carriage is also on here |

are you using the normal site or the mobile site ? the kindle will probably use the normal site so will just use your home location |

OK, if you are looking at his profile on the normal site, his "home" will show as a town. If you look at the mobile app, on the profile it will show as a town.
If you are on the mobile app and you look at "See who's near" then it will show who is closest to you and give an approximate distance. Thing is, you only get to see the first 10 on the app if you are not a site supporter, so the likelyhood of seeing this guy is very remote!
Where exactly are you getting your mileage from? |

Its on the mobile app. You look at the profile and it shows a house with distance from you. Then it says current location using your phones GPS and again gives mileage. On this occassion both said 10 to 15 but he claimed to be 60 away. Have you not seen that on the mobile app?? Its nothing to do with see whose near its on the profile. Home location and current mobile location using GPS |

Seems to be getting more accurate. Seen profiles saying 4 minute walk, another described as very close and one that said touching distance when using my mobile. It's certainly more accurate than it used to be if you are on your mobile using the site. Seems to be when you lose / switch off gps that it goes wrong (obviously) as it will still show the last recorded location hence saying 15 miles when they are now 60 miles away. |
