No idea what the 'big deal' is around this.

To be honest I really don't get what the 'big deal' what your sexuality is being in public either.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

"No idea what the 'big deal' is around this.

If we're really lucky it's a big deal because it's the opening of the floodgates for honesty and tolerance.

That might be an optimistic "if" though...

What harm can it possibly do? If anything it could inspire other gay athletes or people in the public eye to live their lifes as how they want instead of hiding it.

It doesn't matter to open minded people, but obviously the fact there aren't many openly gay sportsmen, in a public sense, means they may see it as a stumbling block or not feel comfortable. Hence why the ones who have come out feel such powerful relief and general empowerment

That is what I was saying. Why does it matter to you? Sniggering school children do not an equal society make. You may call it lighthearted but it requires a little more thinking.

Football is still a very homophobic sport. If a couple of guys are happy to come out, this is good.

I find it odd that it was 'announced' a couple of days ago. Perhaps to get maximum attention. Good luck to them.

Don't understand why anyone has to "Come out" at all. It is about time everyone could be just who they want to be, without all of the stigma or fuss. No-one has to announce that they are heterosexual, so why does a homosexual person have to formally announce their sexuality? Why does it matter or have relevance?

For all saying "so what" these guys have apparently decided to do this together so as to support each other,if the media don't turn this into a witch hunt and deal with it sensitively and sensibly it could be a great thing for kids who look up to these players whether the kids are straight or gay, straight kids could hopefully be able to admire a gay role model and gay kids could hopefully be less afraid to come out.The main problem I feel will be the media.

Agreed. But I wonder if it's a publicity stunt as they will become household names. Although I hide i am bi from family and friends I just don't see why there needs to be a grand announcement to let everyone know. I think this "coming out" is over rated let's face it there's nit many people left that haven't had at least one same sex experience.

I totally agree - but for these players it's a big deal as, from what I've heard and read, there is still a degree of homophobia within football (otherwise why would this even be an issue?).

The football world is very homophobic. I know this from experience. If they are doing this to become household names, honestly, they risk getting shunned by their fellow players ...and the community as a whole. I cannot believe it would be a publicity stunt ..

Is the football world really that homophobic, there was a campaign about ridding homophobia in football a lot of players signed up for. It's more tge fact there's goung to be a grand announcement soon. Why tell the media were going to come out but haven't yet. It worked out ok for the rugby gut can't mind his name. I am wondering if a contract renewal is coming up next season. I think they should just come out now get it over and done with.

Their sexuality is their own business. If they announce it without having been coerced that's fine. The last time I remember there was mention of a coup by the press for outing a possible bisexual / gay ex-footballer a man took his own life.

Actually rugby already did that (Gareth Thomas), it's football that is catching up.

In the words of Ronnie Kray "I'm homosexual but I'm not a poof" - probably applies to Gareth if you see him, not exactly camp looking

As you can tell, it don't bloody matter if they gay straight bi or like sticking their dicks in a tumble dryer. Who they "Do" doesn't dictate who they are. More power to who ever they are.

If the players are still playing then the abuse they will get from so called fans will just be too much unless people tell the mindless twats to shut up.

In this day and age they should be supported but we all know that chants get made up to abuse players and teams.

This is what makes Gareth Thomas' 'coming out' all that much more remarkeable. Football on the whole is pretty 'gay' but ruggers...wow.

And yeah...Harry Kane for sure, bent as a nine bob note ;p

Yeah but if you are insecure about your sexuality then rugby probably isn't the game for you! I mean it's pretty laden with male - male incidental contact...

Hence nobody really cared in rugby when he came out. Other than the LGBT community...

More are at it than you'd guess but most guys who are bi or playing somehow or other won't come out of the closet, it'll just be the gay ones who do.

The reason these guys may come out of the closet is to give them a freedom that non-gay people can take for granted, and that is to just be themselves, and not on their guard. I've had such friends recently stalked and staked out by the media, looking for evidence of gay involvement, and it's awful.

If you want "evidence of gay" you need only look at several of the hair styles currently popular in the premier league.

I heard, from a newspaper reporter a few years ago, that Ashley Cole is and his marriage to Cheryl was pure convenience. It made him appear straight, and it deflected the accusations of racism that were thrown at her after beating up that toilet attendant. This was in the days of superinjuctions being used left right and centre. It does make sense though.

A lot of people are saying 'who cares'? In a sense I agree with this since it should not matter what sexuality anybody is.

However when it comes to footballers it is important. This is for a variety of reasons including the fact that, like it or not, they are role models to millions of people, especially kids. More importantly, not many footballers have come out, one American guy did but he left England and ex Villa and West Ham German International Thomas Hitzilberger did but he retired. Sadly there is still a massive stigma in the sport around homosexuals. Therefore these players coming out is very important.
