Quite often I see a forum post which really comes across as a sly meet request (i.e. My OH thinks my cock is too big, what do you guys think?) do these ever work?

Top bit of your post, I see it more as a 'look at me' thing. They get generally derided on here but like any good marketing campaign it's all about brand awareness. People WILL look and, much like with marketing, if only 1 or 2% are ultimately but seriously interested - it's job done!
