In the 80's it used to be called cottaging .
In the last century lol lots of parks and wooded areas had public toilets. ( cottage) don't forget it was illegal for gays to have sex, so a lot of happened in car parks, parks etc . I can remember the first gay club in Bournemouth , bolts held on a Sunday night at the opera house
I suppose when straights took their dog for a walk in these places it eventually became dogging , as a way to describe straights in the cottage .
Incidentally , a gay that had a string of men in a cottage , was running a cottage industry
Iirc teddy bear on dashboard was a sign
Sitting in the toilet , toilet paper thrown under door repeatedly was another

You could go on a gay switchboard and make a hook up, and if arranged a meeting it would be called setting up a cottage .

This I was told recently as well. You dog someone by following them and spying on them. Nothing to do with walking the dog. |

Cottaging was the gay scene.
Dogging is a bit of a euphemism - for when people take their dog for a late night walk and do the peeping Tom thing.
With the dog as the ' cover story'.
So Cottaging is an indoors thing, mainly bogs - and dogging came to mean outdoors hanging about. Pretending to walk your dog/staring in people's bedroom windows.
Had a neighbour who perfected the 'walk the dog routine' -but it was so obvious once you noticed. |

what i understand to cos mostly it was mid aged couples who would take dog for a walk over woods etc Hence got the Doggin the car?!?!

What else would you have named Dogging if it wasnt called Dogging ?!? I cant think of any except booting but that would confuse ppl! Ramberling gone too! Foraging maybe? |

Cottaging sounds so wrong like having a cottage cheese or clotted cream fettish lol picture that! Might aswell be called Yeasting! |

As far as I understand it keeping "dog" was to keep look out, so following a couple down lovers lane and keeping dog I.e watching... would seem to be a sensible precursor to the more modern term dogging.
