Star Wars had an awful script...I'm not a fan of either, but if we're to choose it would have to be Trek...at least the cast of that were able to 'act' and as for Star Wars?...well, the first two of the originals were ' ok' but Return of the Jedi was just plain awful. As for the prequels?...
I certainly ain't holding out much hope for the new one, that's for sure! |

I hope you're right!
My lad wants to see it so I'll take him. He's a big Star Wars fan, certainly more so than I was at his age!
I always preferred the " what if...?" type sci if myself. Something like John Carpenter's "The Thing" always seemed more powerful than, say, Star Wars or Alien as it was here, effectively today? Same goes for Stargate, They Live or even Independence Day |

The cast was phenomenal and, as for the Thing itself? Easily the greatest of all screen monsters!
I don't think Vader and his lot would have stood a chance against that!

Pro's and Con's of each. As was mentioned before, more politics in star trek, although the end of ds9 seemed stupid, star wars came with lightsabers and that's just cool |

I think if i was stuck on a desert island (with a tv and dvd player and some electricity) i would have to go with Star Trek, the multiple series and films just make a much bigger universe. More moral questions and dilemmas, especially in TNG.
But that said, light sabres are pretty darn cool! |

I loved TNG because of the questions and dilemmas. There were some fantastic storylines |

I was a huge star wars fan as a kid, but kind of grew out of it.
I enjoyed Star Trek as a kid then my age was just about right for TNG too.
Think they did a great job on the reboot movies, although having effectively cured death in the last film, not really sure what other worse dilemmas they'll face!!
Looking forward to the 3rd trek film but will go and see the new Star Wars, not least because I'm hoping it'll take me back to my childhood and I can watch it with my own kids now.

Both so behind-the-times...
Both happy enough to see the destruction of entire worlds...
But neither of them brave enough to include genuinely gay characters or story-lines...!!!
Or even just plain, everyday Star-Swingers...

I'll admit to never seeing any of the Star Wars films in entirety, so can't fully judge them
However, l will say StarTrek, & the development of innumerable races/cultures/histories
Heck!, people even get married in Klingon ceremonies/language!
I'm not a fan of the original Star Trek, even though it had notable points
1. It featured (li understand) the first ever inter-racial kiss ever shown on US television (Kirk & Ulhura)
2. It prompted several NASA astronaughts to follow, & some have gone on record stating that it started the spark that led them into space
3. The technology, look at a communicator (flip-top mobile phones?), ipads as the tablets/touch screen computers used?
4. Whoopi Goldberg is on record as saying thatStar-Trek changed her world
She saw Ulhura & shouted at her mother that there was a black lady on TV & she wasn't a Maid!
She was an equal & listened to as such
Don't forget Goldberg appeared in numerous episodes of TNG, as Guinan
This was at the too of her cinematic career, l seem to recall she turned down film roles (or had written into contracts, she could have time out to film TNG!)
A ground breaking programme in so many ways
"I loved TNG because of the questions and dilemmas. There were some fantastic storylines "
Agreed, such as 'ShoreLeave' , where Jean-Luc visits his brother, they fight, & JL admits his heartache over the Borg assimilation & breaks down in tears
That said, practically anything with Patrick Stewart in is worth watching (he made a magnificent Scrooge!!)
I know it's only a written role, but who wouldn't follow a leader like him?
Avery Brookes (Sisko in DS9) was also a wonderful Captain & leader
Enterprise was a very good idea, with Scott Bakula as a good Captain
T'Pol......wowsers!!!!!!!
The Xindi episodes went on for too long, & was any such attack ever mentioned in the original series |

The new star trek films are far more entertaining, far less ham involved (I'm talking to you Bones!). The star trek spinoffs have been as dull as ditchwater, and the new generation was so up its own arse it was untrue. Really annoying characters and crap effects. Star wars has been guilty in 1 to 3 of being to glossy and overuse of CGI fucked it up, though if the stories had been filmed a la "new hope", they would have been better and more accepted by the fans.
I will always favour Star Wars, as its better cinematographically, and it deals with emotional issues better than the old star trek ones did. JJ Abrams has given star trek the kick up the arse it needed, put in some good actors and made it bigger and better than it ever was. Competition between the two can only be a good thing for the punters. |

Most annoying thing for me when I saw the original sw as a kid was the line Guiness had about the troopers when they discovered all those things that Luke had bought the droids from had been murdered?
He said something along the lines that it must have been storm troopers as the blasts were too accurate...
Yet, later in the movie those guys couldn't hit a barn door!
The magic of Sw was lost on me as, before I'd seen it, I had already seen the likes of Jaws, Escape from New York and, as previously mentioned, The Thing-so is already seen what a great script and top notch performances could do with a film which, sadly Star Wars had nothing of the sort. |

Fair point I suppose- so they send the good ones out to do stuff whilst the naff ones stay at home lol!
Must admit, loved that rip off Mel Brooks done of Star Wars, and William Shatner's appearances on Airplane II and Police Squad! ( in Color!) were absolutely brilliant! |

Star Wars was exactly what Lucas intended it to be. A big screen full length film that relived the magic of the old Saturday morning serials like Flash Gordon. It was meant to be a romp, a bit of old fashioned escapism. I do think that the age you were when you saw it has a big effect, like songs do.
I was seven when I first saw it, and for me its the best film of all time, because it had such an impact on me. It's the same with Dr Who, Tom Baker, will always be my Dr Who. I appreciate the others, Ecclestone and Tennant were fantastic, the rest...meh...but that's because of initial impact. |

That's a good point.
It's the same as Bond or something like that. For me, my favourite was Roger Moore, not necessarily that he was the best, but as he was the first- for me ( I saw three or four of his before I had seen a Connery one ) |

Star wars, it's iconic.
Problem is with star trek, you have the original series, next generation, ds9, voyager, enterprise and all the films, it's bit of a series overload. |

Stargate was a very clever film, great believable idea and an astonishing collection of performances from Russell and Spader.
Interesting that Lucas wanted Kurt to play Han Solo but he turned it down flat ( though he was happy to read the Solo part for other auditionees for dialogue.)
At the time he was a pro baseball player and the only reason he returned to acting was because of an injury ( he was a child star ).
I can't imagine anyone other than Ford as Han, but you never know with these things... |

This! Massive star wars fan here, i'll happily watch star trek, but it will never hold a place in my heart. Very excited (excited being an understatement) for the new films, and the fact that my two little boys love it as well. In fact i'm so excited i could quite possibly explode! |

Perfectly possible to love both.
As a 7 seeing his first ever film in the cinema you can never remove he image of the star destroyer filling the screen. ( just wish I could remove Jar jar).
Love what JJ has done with Star Trek and hope he does the same for Star Wars. |

It's got to be star wars, I enjoy trek but the politics and ethos around it is too nice! Star wars is much darker in concept and theme.
Trek films are great but their habit of transposing earth cultures into space is irritating and many episodes are lame at best. |

in order of greatness:
commander data(I so hope he pops into a reboot!!!)
spock
seven of nine(phoaaar still..she was the saving grace for voyagers eventful woefulness)
picard
Worf
Jadzia Dax(mmm terry ferrel!)
Q
odo
borg queen(alice cridge first contact)
On a side note, I loved watching the late night versions of TNG..theres a few that were censored from the daytime versions!(example- an alien race who takes over bodies...riker and picard both phaser the head off one of the smarmiest horrid characters whos been compromised), in the cut version picard n riker just look at each other and go ewww

Christopher Walken tried out for Han Solo as well. I've seen the footage of his audition. He would have been good, but he always is!
Look on YouTube for some great comedy auditions of famous people trying out for star wars. Kevin Spacey does a great Walter Matthau being Obi Wan. |

Star trek is one dimensional. It's like a fucking soap opera. Star wars taught us not to be arseholes in the 80's. I regard 80's movies as modern(ish) life bibles. Good prevails! Even teen Wolf had a moral haha |
