For hearty foods, preparing the first stew of the autumn, no pearl barley though, any advise for substitutes?

I grew some great beans from Peru, they are superb in a stew.

But doesn't help you much ??

Ha spent a fair bit of time in Peru. There are a number of ingredients that would ale a stew interesting.

My slow cooker works overtime in the winter. Load it up I the morning. Leave it on low all day. Get home from work. Mmmmmmmmm scrummy. Cook all sorts in it. Curry, chilli, stew, goulash's. Yum

Wonder how they would fit with red lentil, bugger it, could use hundreds of thousands instead.

Actually got me thinking ( not a good idea this time of night)

There are a lot of unusual food combinations about, what would make a great ingredient to add to dumpings?

Flageolets perhaps.

But what's the basis?

If beef, what about a Med take with olives (last minute) and borlotti beans?
