So where do you stand on it? I've noticed more and more in the cyber world people using the word ass instead of arse.
Why do British people use this appalling Americanism? and moreover why is it they only confine it to the written form? When was the last time you were stood with a group of mates in a pub, clocked a nice looking woman walking past with a desirable derriere and one of them piped up with "fuck me, what a fantastic ass she's got?"....the bloke would get laughed out of the place so why is it so prevalent on this site and similar
I'm hereby launching the new SOA (Save our Arse) campaign, the great british arse is becoming an endangered specie and we should do all we can to protect it.....let's kick ass into touch |

"People who are British and use the term ASS are ARSES!"
When referring to someone who is a bit of a knob I'll write arse, but for some reason I don't like to use that for a nice female bottom and prefer ass. It's not the only weird thing about me. |

I roll my eyes at this entire thread. Whenever I read anything on the forums about how Americans speak it is "appalling" or "rubbish."
To me, "arse" sounds ridiculous. Just saying

I agree with you. Not you being weird or I'd be an arse. No prefer calling it ass. |

Definitely arse! Using ass instead is just garbage! When I bump my tush on a shopping cart, I'd never use an Americanism and say ass! Keep hearing ass all the time, seriously I was only doing the math on it last night. It sucks!

I'm with you on this (although I feel the adjective 'appalling' may be a little strong) but then I feel the same way about the prissy American term 'pussy' which seems to have completely taken over. |

Just earlier on today I sent a text declaring myself as a 'bad arse bitch'.
I spent a while before clicking send as to what the receiver might think of my use of arse... But I just could never say ass!! |

Linguistic purists, the lot of you. You should create your own version of the Academie Francaise and be done with it.
I think I'll start referring to words like "brolly" and "telly" as appalling Britishisms."

I bet you're all doing it now!!

Why does it have to be a southern accent?!? Why do all British people think Americans speak like that?
It sounds wonderful coming from a New Yorker, I promise

This topic is quite funny to say the least
I donno, I find it genuinely more easier to say "Ass" then "arse" as I don't have to make the pronunciation so deep.
But at the same time I think the word "Ass" is sort of a cheap way of describing a bum then "arse" as saying "arse" seems of a natural English slang.
So I would say we should stick to our own native slang as it comes and sounds better then when we are trying to "pretend" and copy another area's slang. |

"Right up next we have the pronunciation of aluminium "
I hate having to explain this constantly to British people.
Americans do not pronounce aluminum "incorrectly." We actually spell it differently. As you can see from my post.
And before you get all snobish about that too i'll note that our spelling is the original spelling (look it up if you don't believe me).
I'll add that to my list of Britishisms.

The other half is Irish and all he's ever said is Alumillium... It frustrates me no end... I persecuted the poor boy over it until I realised everyone else in Ireland said it that way!!
Add a third aluminium aluminum pronunciation!!
Laughing my socks off here. |
