If you go to Sephora, or some place similar, they will tell you what you can use and the best way to use it. That is what I did when I was younger.
But if you don't want to do that, I find that watching YouTube videos really helps. Then its just a matter of getting the stuff and practicing on yourself. Then you can look like this
Not sure if this helps, but good luck! |

You tube videos definitley! Everything I know about makeup I taught myself from videos. I love that I can type in whatever look I want to do, e.g. smoky eye, contouring, winged eyeliner and there will be loads of step by step tutorials.
If you're going to a counter for a lesson see if there's an Illamasqua counter near you: they are amazing. |

Thanks for the tips girls, I'm not sure I'd be confident enough to go to the counter as I don't know what they'd make of me, I think the tutorials sound the best, do they advise on products that you need or should have too and matching colours with your skin etc? |

I think the best thing to do to match colours to your skin tone is to go to a makeup store and put the testers to the test...so to speak. Just spend a minute putting a touch on of various colours and seeing how it looks. I know that it might be intimidating going to the store to do this, but it really is the best option. Especially if you want to get the right colours, etc.
But the YouTube videos will advise on the best products on a basic level. Though, I think everyone just has their own opinions on that score. If you are just starting with makeup, though, make sure you get a really good cleanser and moisturizer too so your skin doesn't pay the price for your beauty!

Get the best foundation you can afford (Estee Lauder Double Wear and Kryolan pan sticks are brilliant. High Street foundation doesn't work too well for TVs).
Get products with strong pigments.
Invest in some decent brushes.
Watch YouTube tutorials and play! |

I think I may pop to the department store at lunch and have a look, I could always say they are a present for a someone who has similar skin tones! Lol.
So what are my basics that I need to start? |

Wayne Goss on youtube is amazing, he has a full series called the basics that will teach you everything you need to know. Also try Shonagh Scott, her contouring video is brilliantly simple and will help you lots xx |
