How do you take compliments ?

It was recently pointed out to me by a friend that whenever someone compliments me I accept the compliment but I also add something to put myself down.
An example of this would be for instance somebody telling me my hair looks nice and me saying that its only because I just washed it rather than just thanking them.
Are you good at taking compliments ? Do you like to receive them or does it make you feel awkward ? |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I read in a magazine once that British women are very bad at taking compliments, and that its rude to say 'thanks but...'. Ever since then I just say 'thank you' and smile. Whether I believe it or not. |

But the person giving the compliment meant it. Much better just to say thank you and accept it in the manner it was meant.
I do end up giving them a compliment a back though.
My mum is the worse. Tell her you like her top and she tells you how much it was and where she got it from. Just say thank you. (Makes the other person feel good as well) |

But I think there are a lot of people in the same boat and sometimes when receiving a compliment it can make people feel slightly uncomfortable to and more self aware. |

I'm awful at taking compliments. I get really uncomfortable when someone compliments me on here or in real life. I automatically assume they're lying and then I find a way to point out something negative about me.
Issues here, clearly! |

I am terrible at getting compliments. I usually blush , look down and maybe giggle a little bit. I never say thank you in person, it seems too cocky so I don't. On here I usually just say thanks and then reply with what's attractive about the sender . X |

I don't take compliments very well, I usually skim over the fact that someone had paid me 1 because I just get embarrassed by it. From experience and the replies on the thread I think most are the same and this is quite normal |

Seems most of us are our own worst critics then.
I'm going to try and accept more graciously from now on but its hard to break the habit of a lifetime. |

Depends on who is paying the compliment & if it's genuine ~ I'm old enough to spot a fake one
For example if a women was to say that my hair looked lovely I would justify the compliment by saying why I thought it did, just washed / hairdressers etc....
If a man was to pay the same compliment I would simply reply with a thank you. |

Depends on who says it.
OP do you give compliments to other people? See how they react. Then use that to help you accept compliments from other people- you will be able to tell when they are complimenting you for real or not. Hope that makes sense. x |

If I'm complimented by someone other than the people I'm really close to, I think are they being sarcastic? For what purpose have they done it? I genuinely don't believe them.
If it's said by someone I love or care for I find it incredibly awkward. I change the subject quickly. I just don't seem to be able to accept it and say thank you.
I'm weird, I must be! |
