They are straight chain or cyclic alkyl nitrites. Originally it was amyl nitrite but that specific one is now banned. Once inhaled they cause the release of nitric oxide into the blood which causes the relaxation of smooth muscles including the anal sphincter.
They are incredibly dangerous to use with other drugs which release nitric oxide especially erectile disfunction treatments and treatments for angina. |

Excellent and accurate answer.
I tried them years ago as a teenager and really all they did for me was give me a brief, thumping headache and on occasion turn my vision red.
But in theory they can relax certain muscles. The lady who helped teach me how to fist used poppers to relax herself as I have big hands.

Personally I'm not a fan of any drugs. In my opinion, if you're having trouble with anal you just need to practice. Maybe spend some time on your own with a variety of toys and plenty of lube, build up from small to bigger and take it slowly. |

Swallowing alkyl nitrites (butyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite and amyl nitrite) is very likely to kill you.
Inhalation may also kill you by inducing a cardiac dysrhythmia.
As indicated above, 'poppers' should never be used in conjunction with Sildenafil (Viagra) or certain anti-hypertensive medications.
Amyl nitrite (the original 'popper') is a legitimate medication for the immediate treatment of cyanide poisoning.

The bluish colour is due to the conversion of oxygen carrying haemoglobin in the blood to methaemoglobin, which cannot bind oxygen.
A bluish colour in the mucous membranes suggest a methaemoglobin concentration of 10 - 20%.
20 - 30% methaemoglobin is associated with breathlessness on exertion, anxiety and headache.
30 - 50% methaemoglobin gets you into fatigue, confusion, palpitations, dizzyness and rapid breathing.
50 - 70% methaemoglobin is associated with seizures, coma and cardiac dysrhythmia.
Above 70% methaemoglobin and you're likely to be dead. |

I have had a nasty reaction from inconsiderate people using them in group settings in confined areas... It makes me quite ill.
I find guys using lose their hard ons and just its very off putting not to mention inconsiderate to use around people without asking
