On another forum, there's a dude who works freelance for a lot of the big porn companies in California who's done a Q/A.
From what I understand, most guys, at least on the straight side, get in because they know a women in the industry. Good looking guys with the right equipment are easy to find. Guys the girls feel comfortable working with really aren't. Lot of creepers trying to get into the porn industry. Money is also really bad for guys, which is why so many actors go 'gay-for-pay' where wages are a bit better.
The ability to cum on demand, no matter how horny you do or don't feel at that moment is also a big part. If you cum half way into a shoot, or they have to keep the cameras rolling for 10 minutes while you get off at the end, you won't get any more work. That's a lot of pressure, but some guys seem to have the magic gene that lets them do it. It's also apparently not a whole lot of fun - it takes 5-6 hours to shoot 15-20 minutes worth of material. You'll be doing 2 minutes, then taking a 10 minute break for them to relight, then another 3 minutes that gets stopped just as your getting into it because a boom is in shot then another 30 minute break etc etc.
Can you walk on a hot set, with a boom mic in your face, a blinding hot light in your eye, a bunch of guys staring at you and orgasm on queue? Most guys can't, which is why shoots reuse the same guys over and over again.
There is the amateur side as others have mentioned. That's less demanding physically, but to make that work, though, you'll need to be ready to shoot, edit, distribute and, critically, market your content. I hope you like video editing, web design and spreadsheets, cause that's what 95% of that gig really is.
