At risk of duplicating any possible earlier posts......
What is the problem with page 3 girls? Why stop printing them??
If anyone doesn't like page 3 girls in a newspaper, then don't buy the paper, simples!

I think there's a lot more to it than 'don't buy it if you don't like it'... To me it's about objectification of women (which has its place in certain sexual contexts, don't get me wrong!)... but it's the fact that it's a newspaper, and it devalues the validity of the news it reports, by posting pictures of topless girls. There's also the fact that it's accessible to young boys, and will give them a skewered view on women, much like the impact of porn has had on the sexual development of boys and young men.
I agree there's a time and a place for page three models, but not in a newspaper. It seems tacky, and derogatory, and helps to perpetuate the patriarchy - coor, look at the knockers on her, ... it's not pleasant!!! |

I do agree with the above, there are many other publications where naked women can be found, why is/was it deemed socially acceptable to be found in a newspaper of all places? |

If I wish to see topless girls, I will ask a lady over or look at porn. I do not wish to see it in a newspaper (if the Sun can be described as a newspaper). Gotcha! (For those who remember that headline). |

We have so many outlets for imagery like this now a days, do we need it in a newspaper too? No..

I don't really see what's natural about breast implants and bleach blonde hair, with tonnes of make up? The representation of the female body is a way of expressing the dominant thoughts in that culture. The Sun, made for and by bawdy men, perpetuates the notions that women are objects, through the overt sexualization of their female subjects.
It's not just in Pg 3 though, it's throughout ... just look at the Showbiz section - 'NIP SLIP FROM TOP TOWIE STAR SO AND SO' ... who actually cares if someone from a shit TV show had a nip slip? What was the context of a nip slip, was she having a nice drink with some mates, in a bar? Surely that (if any of the story) is what's worth reporting, but i'd hardly say that The Sun, and other Pg 3 publications, 'report' things... |

As to objectification, balls. Don't see women complaining about giant posters of incredibly toned men in underwear or in magazines and how they unfairly portray the avarage male body.
Whole world's gone mad. |

That also is objectification....just us men are a little less likely to talk about the fact we have to live up to these images of the ripped adonis (not you shag if your reading this, you've got that image down pretty well fella) as we're not quite as open with that stuff....we prefer to come across all confident and not giving a fuck...
Also, the o.p was about page three girls and not boxer short models, so that's what folk are answering to.

The link below is an interesting video on how The Scum portray woman. Page 3 is just a small part of it. It is still a vile sexist misogynistic pile of crap that only serves to reinforce outdated stereotypes

Incidentally, for those commenting about silicone, you are of course aware that The Sun introduced a no-silicone policy, after readers voted for it, in 1997.

We see it in boxer short ads and aftershave ads and all over the gaff anyhow.....
It's the reason half the blokes on this site, myself included, have pics up that we think make us look our best...arty pics like my avatar, arty fatty b&w stuff....lah de da.
Why? Because somewhere on a deeper level, I probably feel I should look a certain way...its creeping in for blokes too man, the male fashion and grooming market has never been so big....why? Because we've been slowly drip fed a standard to achive, the same as women have for years....wer're not so different to the fairer sex. |

Perhaps, but the women are still picked based on them looking like only a tiny percentage of other women so they're still highly mis representative of women as a whole. |

In 1988, The Sun introduced the Page 7 fella, but it did not prove to be very popular - apparently the sight of a bare man's chest wasn't as appealing to women as a bare woman's chest was to men - and it was subsequently dropped in the early 90's |

That may very well be the case, but my comment was made in response to comments about breast implants - which the Sun has not allowed on Page 3 since 1997. |

patriarchy affects men as well as women. Men are held up against a certain, masculine way kf being, sure its not as bad as us vagina bearers get it,but its still pretty bad! ideas of masculinity and machismo pressure to perform sexually, objectify women... Its all so ingrained you don't really question it... But yay for feminism!!! |

Fair enough, i didn't know about it.I was just adding that I still think the ladies are if not fake, then highly mis-representative so it still stands that they're objectified....held up as as an example of 'perfection' |

I don't think there is any problem with people enjoying the image of a beautiful perfectly formed young lady. No one is being "objectified". A beautiful woman is just that, and beautiful to look at and admire.
Whether a newspaper (and I use the term loosely in the case of The Sun) is the correct place for this is where the real debate should be, not weather the girl is fat, thin big, small boobed faked or whatever.

I think you're being completely unfair on the women, I as a Liverpool supporter personally hate the sun for other reasons among the shite it spouts. However out of the current glamour models I would say maybe 5-10% are as you described. A lot of them are real women with insecurities just like everyone else ranging from being skinny to curvy. They love to shovel pizza in just like the rest of us! |

You know what... I don't hate tits. And I don't think that tits should be banned from being able to be looked at. And I watch porn myself. And I'm a nudist. And when I was younger I used to be a nude and glamour model - I was even in Escort mag. And I don't think that The Sun is inherently a bad newspaper.
So why did I campaign asking for The Sun to remove Page 3?
Because I believe that women should be treated respectfully in mass media. In fact I believe that women should be treated with the same amount of respect as men are.
It was striking that when the team at NMP3 HQ cut out all of the pictures of men and women from The Sun over a period of months and plastered them on the wall, the men's side was a sea of powerful authoritative figures, from sportsmen to politicians, all in their clothes. The women's side was a sea of flesh, with a lone clothed woman - Margaret Thatcher.
What The Sun is saying here, and reinforcing through their imagery is 'to get into the news if you are a man you have to be successful, but if you are a woman then you have to take your clothes off and look perfect'.
The founder of the NMP3 campaign did so after opening The Sun the day after Ennis won her Gold in 2012. Pretty fucking impressive stuff. Amazing in fact. Winning gold is no easy feat. You know who the biggest image in The Sun was that day? The Page 3 model. Once again - you can win GOLD in the Olympics in one of the most demanding discipline, but they'll still only print a big picture of you if you get your tits out.
It's not about the nipples. It's not about stopping people looking at tits. It's about trying to raise the journalistic integrity of the mass media and asking them to treat women with respect. It doesn't really seem too much to ask for, if I'm honest. And as a journalist myself I back this campaign whole-heartedly. |

I think it's important to remember that sitting behind those desks are people who need a job. It would be lovely to think that all the people who work at The Sun are cunts, but the reality is that they're just doing their job, as their boss wants them to do it. Like you and I. (Well, not like me, I'm lucky that I can turn down misogynistic clients).
Which is why this campaign targeted the management and ownership. It's not the individual journalists that are generally the problem. It's our managers, our advertisers, our owners. |

Page 3 isn't something I pay attention too as I never buy papers , but regardless of sexism , or whether it's right or wrong to show tits in a newspaper , a fair few young ladies have made successfull carreers off the back of it , which may not have happened otherwise , so it can't be all that bad |

So it's not fine for people to criticise the people behind the desk for spouting the drivel, because they're just doing as their boss wants and they need the job however it's fine to be anti page 3 and have no concern over the Young ladies jobs that are the models?
Little bit double standards in my opinion |

'A far few old white dudes have made sucessfull careers off of the back of slavery, which might not have happened otherwise, so it can't be all that bad.'"
And how does that compare |

I'm pointing out how your logic is wrong.
Just because something makes someone money, doesn't mean it is 'not all that bad'. |

"I'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree. Too early for me to reel out the many reasons I hate it!
So it's not fine for people to criticise the people behind the desk for spouting the drivel, because they're just doing as their boss wants and they need the job however it's fine to be anti page 3 and have no concern over the Young ladies jobs that are the models?
Little bit double standards in my opinion "
None of those 'young ladies' have full time jobs at The Sun. The Sun does not support them. Some of them don't even get paid. Some of them even really hate what they do, but don't have any other career options open to the right now. Some of them in the past have even been forced into doing it by other people.
Not exactly a bed of roses.
As I said, I used to be an adult model. But I still don't believe that newspapers are the right place to show pictures of nude women when it's not news. |

They may not have a full time job at the sun however it opened other doorways for them granting them opportunities at other jobs in the business and outside of the business. I have seen one model who's very involved with raising awareness for testicular cancer, without that exposure she wouldn't be.
A lot of the women LOVE their job, just because some don't doesnt mean it's fine for them to lose it. I'm sure plenty of the 'journalists' if you can call them that at the sun hate their job too. Especially if it's there bosses telling them to conjure up and publish all the shite. So what's the difference in them losing their job? |

"I think there's a lot more to it than 'don't buy it if you don't like it'...
Oh pleeeeeeeeeeeease!!
Try and think outside of the box.
Nothing wrong with topless women!! It's only a natural image
"
Would you be happy to see a picture of a man with his (non erect) genitals hanging out and a sweet smile? Its not illegal.
If you want to see tits, go to the beach or buy a porn mag. |

"As to objectification, balls. Don't see women complaining about giant posters of incredibly toned men in underwear or in magazines and how they unfairly portray the avarage male body.
Whole world's gone mad."
How about if they had nothing on at all? Do you want to see a male models bell end and balls in heat magazine? What's good for the goose... |

"At risk of duplicating any possible earlier posts......
What is the problem with page 3 girls? Why stop printing them??
If anyone doesn't like page 3 girls in a newspaper, then don't buy the paper, simples!
"
Money
The problem is that page three girls no longer sell issues of the Sun.
That being the case there was no longer a reason to show them.
It had nothing to do with the campaign (which incedentally increased sales of the Sun for a while), it was simple basic ecomomics |

"It isn't illegal to show male genitalia if its flaccid.
Women's breasts in the Sun, are sexualised. Is it not fair to put men on the same level?"
There's no mainstream market for it, most will agree the female form is much more appealing to look at wether you're gay straight or bi.
I'm sure if it would make them money then the sun would publish it |

"You know what...
And as a journalist myself I back this campaign whole-heartedly."
This is an awesome post. And sums up my thoughts far more eloquently than.i could post them
The exercise of comparing images is the you tube link that I shared earlier in the thread. Anyone that thinks there is nothing wrong with page 3 really should watch it.
The Jessica Ennis is one I was unaware of but I have read previously that the largest pictures of Vicky Pendleton were from magazine shoots she had done rather than images of her racing. And that in itself speaks volumes that The Sun actually report modelling shoots as news.

How can the sun be called a newspaper when it seems that most is gossip ?
Also the girls who were on page 3 looked at it as a way of getting noticed?
Maybe not the right way ! But now we have loads of reality shows for anyone who wants to try for fame ? Maybe that's a better way ?? |

There isn't a market for tits either. There might have been in the seventies. Nobody buys the sun to look at tits. They buy it because their too stupid to understand what a proper newspaper is. Its a NEWSpaper. Not a TITpaper.
Please don't day that most will agree that the female form is more pleasing to look at. Its just your assumption as a straight man. Most women don't actually want to see it, and I'm pretty sure gay man have no interest in it. Your the definition of a patriarch aren't you? |

There's no market for tits... Wow what a stupid statement. The porn industry is one of the biggest in the world so that kills that statement, there's also a pretty big market for tits on this site, I reckon the most fabbed pictures will be tits. Look at the Suns target audience for starters, I can assure you they aren't too bothered about what David Cameron had to say about the current state of world affairs. |

So why purport to be a newspaper then? Why not just have tits on every other page, interspersed with "nip slips", " wardrobe malfunctions" and paparazzi pics where they have more or less tried to get a picture of woman's crotch by sticking their camera up their skirt. They lie in the gutter to take these shots. How they got out of the sewer I'll never know.
Look at the whole of the newspaper buying public. How many of them buy the sun just because its got tits in it? If you think women buy the sun for that reason, your mistaken. That's a huge chunk of your sun buyers right there. Many blokes buy it for sports. Many people buy it for cheap holiday deals. The makers of the sun have seen the writing on the first wall. Not enough of there readership (or looking at the pictureship) want tits on page 3. It isn't needed to sell the paper.
You say the porn industry is one of the biggest in the world, fair enough, but that's on the top shelf and is honest enough to admit its their as pornography. It doesn't sit amongst the other red tops pretending to be a newspaper. Which do you want a decent porn mag, or a shitty newspaper? |

We have such double standards in this country.
Public nudity is quite normal in Europe, yet in the UK you can get arrested and you are likely to be branded a perv. Yet we are quite happy to go topless on a Public beach on holiday.
I went to a large sports centre in a small rural town in Germany, mainly an indoor and outdoor tennis centre, multiple courts, massive area with all the weight machines, cycling, running, aerobic classes, etc, bar, restaurant, attached hotel, like a Premier Inn,and a superb Health suite
Every one was naked. Young and old.Teenage sons and daughters enjoying sauna and steam with parents and friends.Nudity is normal and natural.
I am suspicious of those who think otherwise.
Alot of people in this country are repressed, stuck with a 1960's Benny Hill/Carry on Camping mentality.
What the Sun never did was show that women's tits come in all shapes and sizes, and they are all normal. You don't need lumps of silicone.
