Staying outside city centre may be best. A number of city centre budget hotel have a doorman who checks you are are a guest before letting you in. Have experience this around Chna Town /Gay Village area. Others such as Premier Inn West Bromwich (near Xtasia) require you to use your card key to access the lift - not so good for your guests trying to make there way to your room.
