Living where I do, I`ve looked into driving down the west coast of France from Cherbourg to Agde. It`s about 100 miles less than going via the tunnel but takes around the same amount of time to travel.
Anyone had any experience of driving this route? |

Plenty of hotels around Clermond-Ferrand to break the journey. We have done the drive down that side twice and find it much easier to break the journey. Even crossing at Calais we would head down via Orleans, Bourges and Clermand-Ferrand. |

Made the journey from calais a couple of times stopped at clermont ferrand trip down orlean on way back. Camp site at Cap Rene Oltra can't book until 6th of Jan end of June beginning of July popular after that higher numbers of kids. |

we do a couple of thousand miles in France on my blade, you'll be fine! |

What a great thread. We are going this year and are torn between motorcycling down or flying.
Clearly, flying is the most cost effective but going down on the bikes is a massive adventure.
Um, what to do! There end June, anyone also going then? |

Of all of the ways of getting down from where I am (East Dorset) as a single person probably the cheapest way is by train!!!  Although I have Bournemouth airport on my doorstep, no planes fly to the area from there. Southampton has some flights to airports a little further away but by the time you factor in taxis from the airport you`re not that much better off!
Train for me would be to London, Eurostar to Paris then the overnight sleeper to Narbonne. It is an early stop there and only one stop up the line to Agde station. And then it`s a local bus which goes right down to the naturist village 
I downloaded an e-book titled Cape D`Agde Uncovered which is a mine of information about most things you need to know. It does cost a bit but it`s worth it!  |

I've debated including this part of the world in some travelling adventures, I'll follow this thread with interest. It's a hell of a drive from north England, no matter what you're driving, train seems good but stopping over in a place or two. Plane is easiest but it's a bit dull, though flying is cheapest I'd imagine. |

It's even longer from Glasgow so try to set aside a bit of time for the journey. No point in exhausting yourself such that you spend the holiday recovering. |

That must be tedious and stressful journey. By the time you arrived.you must be worn out. Repeating the same journey back home. Better to take the budget airlines that shuttle the journey.
As a group is ok.but as single person embarking on such journey.it doesn't worth it. If you wish to continue with this. Good luck |

Have you thought of the portsmouth-le harve crossing, its overnight ferry, gets you a good nights sleep, then take the national roas to clemond ferrand before picking up the A10
i did on my bike couple of years back, was brill in june, but watch your speed on the A roads, if the road has a warning of a camera, then there WILL be one

I have heard that the gendarmes are also very prone to hiding with speed cameras and there is NO tolerance on speeding! |

The worst part of the journey is getting to Dover from anywhere north of Birmingham. Last time we drove to CDA we were tormented by roadworks, delays and even parts of the M25 being closed and yet on the other side ex did not see a single cone there and back! |

Try driving to Dover from Dorset! About 20 miles of motorway at the most! Then it`s crap A roads the rest of the way if you`re sticking to the coast! Have to go via M3, M25 etc. before you can head towards Dover! Evil place to get to! |
