I was reminded today of a couple of years ago when a guy wanted to meet me, but in public to weigh me up and see if I was good enough for him, he basically said, but not in so many words.
Instantly charmed I told him that rather than me spend several hours getting ready for what might merely be a quick cup of coffee followed by an 'ugh, you're a man!' type public rejection he would simply have to catch up with me the next time I was out and about.
This happened to be a late night Christmas shopping trip to the Metro Centre. The guy was very excited by this and told me, rather than speak to me, he'd prefer to wander silently behind me, watching me shop and perhaps occasionally brush against me if he found himself getting aroused.
You know when sometimes you can't quite work out if someone has appreciated your sarcasm...
Anyway, quite honestly I thought he must be taking the piss and either he would just walk up, laugh at the joke and say hello straight away or wouldn't dare turn up. One of the two.
So I told him where I would be, at what time and how I would be dressed and wondered if I would in fact have a stalker.
He did turn up. I didn't notice him in the first shop but in the next two I thought I knew who it was, though he hung a long way back. So then I started playing a game to see if I could flush him out and made sure I went to every womens lingerie shop or department I knew, holding up the sexiest knickers and basques I could find. He followed, looking more and more embarrassed. A few times I reversed into him which flustered him and one time I stopped abruptly to check my shoe buckle and the guy only just stopped in time from nearly walking into me.
He never did speak and wandered off when I was spending too long in the M&S underwear department.
The whole thing was more amusing than sinister, I must say. When I came back online that night the guy had left the site, poor fellow. Not ready for real life encounters I think.
