in an ideal world that would be great we would all prefer bareback but its not an ideal world so wise to insist on protection.

I'm not going to pretend that people shouldn't care about HIV, they obviously should, but this isn't the 1980s anymore. Having HIV isn't the end of the world or even a significant inconvenience to everyday life.

you might not think so but I'd find it more than a significant inconvenience if I found out I'd caught HIV from someone

I'd never play bareback with anyone I met on Fab. I'd only ever consider it if I was to find myself in a relationship again.

Glad you think so but im not convinced, not everyone dies from it but every time you meet someone you would have to tell them and not that many would want to have sex with a person with HIV would they, unless they hate themselves.

I hate taking tablets and wouldn't want to have to take them every day because most drugs have some side effects and don't do you much good.

I've had plenty of sex since I contracted HIV and none of it (that I'm aware of) with people who hate themselves. No one has contracted it from me and certainly no one has died from it. No one does from it in the UK unless they purposefully don't take the meds and never get checked.

Please don't scare monger when you don't know what you're talking about. I've got no problem with you not wanting to meet people with HIV; that's entirely your choice, but don't imply people die from HIV in the UK. Like I said, it isn't the 1980s.

Not scare mongering at all just saying its something that concerns me and I don't get why it doesn't seem to bother a lot of others on here.

I didn't say that people die from it just that you have to be on drugs for the rest of your life, you make it sound like a walk in the park.

Often they are symptomless.....I know someone who had/has p.i.d.....drs believe it was caused by untreated clymidia.....

She is now infertile.....

Being 50 odd and getting treated for s.t.i's makes no difference.....just because something is "treatable" doesn't make it less of an impact on your life.

Antibiotics are becoming less and less effective.... There will be no "cure" soon enough

Herpes has little to do with bareback..lots of people do not even realise they have it,(like hiv)but less serious..

In response to OP...people wont be honest about this, but more people do bareback than you imagine...I am asked many times if I will ride bareback...

Not having HIV is even less of a significant inconvenience to everyday life.

There are many medical conditions that you can live with - diabetes, hep C, crohn's - but I'm sure most people would prefer not to.

If not indulging in bareback sex reduces the risk of picking something up - a short term or life long disease - how can this not be seen as a positive thing?

There will always be those that will continue to play bare and maybe those who say they only play safe but do play bare,it's just the way it is. We have the attitude it's their choice and that's that. All we want is for people to enjoy the site as we have.

"How do you know you are not infecting others? Not having a go just curious."

All the evidence points towards no possibility of transmission. The PARTNER study followed serodiscordant couples (I.e. one has HIV and the other doesn't) who have unprotected sex and with the HIV positive partner on meds. In over 40,000 reported sexual encounters there were no transmissions. Several negative people in the study did contract HIV but it was proven not to come from their partner.

The PROUD study looked at transmission to people on PReP and you couldn't join it if you were undetectable because they didn't believe you could transmit HIV and thus would be an immune respondent in the study. As a sideline it recently had to terminate early because the evidence was so overwhelming that people on Truvada (i.e. PReP) couldn't catch HIV that they had an ethical obligation to start giving the meds to the control cohort.

No medical evidence has yet been found that links an HIV infection to an undetectable person.

I think it's a given that most would but in this lifestyle you have to be so careful.....getting checked regularly even if you don't do bareback is just as important and I think people forget that

I really do wonder if STI's and Aids are as prevalent as folk seem to think.

At what point in a stable relationship does it become acceptable to "risk" unprotected sex - on production of an all-clear certificate?

I am really concerned myself about all the incurable diseases that still exist where condoms do not offer an impenetrable magic defence and which can be caught without sexual contact.

Just think about this little list: Ebola, Polio (if not inoculated), influenza, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, HIV/AIDS, Norovirus, Malaria, SARS, dysentery and the common cold. Least we forget the non-communicable killers like diabetes, lupus and Cancer.

Live safe; Live sterile; don't go near people!!

"I really do wonder if STI's and Aids are as prevalent as folk seem to think.

At what point in a stable relationship does it become acceptable to "risk" unprotected sex - on production of an all-clear certificate?"

In 2012 they estimated that 98,400 people in the UK were living with AIDS (including the undiagnosed ones). That is about 0.2% of the adult population or 1 in 9,000 adults. 57% of all new cases are bi or gay men.

The predicted chances of catching AIDS from conventional intercourse are about 1:1,234 for a woman and 1:2,380 for a man. These odds fall quickly if the man or woman is an anal sex receiver.

So the chances of meeting someone with AIDS in the UK and then contracting HIV are, statistically, 1:11,100,000 for a woman and 1:21,400,000 for a straight man. The chances of dying in a car accident in your lifetime is circa 1:462.

BUT the chances of catching AIDS from receptive anal sex amongst bi/gay men, partner unknown status, is a scary 1:370. Perhaps this explains the difficulties some couples have with bi/gay men?

But, just as you could die in your first car ride you could contract aids during your first sex. Your choice; but in no way is it Russian roulette (1:6 chance of dying).

The thing is you can get things like cancer through no fault of your own, there is always something you can get wrong with you, but nobody needs to have risky unsafe sex do they, so if you got HIV it would be your own fault and could of been avoided.

If you smoke the risk of getting cancer is far greater than catching AIDS through bareback sex yet people still smoke. It just seems that STIs are socially unacceptably and even the mild ones are "feared".

"I really do wonder if STI's and Aids are as prevalent as folk seem to think.

Unfortunately STIs are on the increase, generally among young 20 somethings.

However you make a good point, it's interesting that people consider a random person/couple a high risk, versus the same random person they date for a while then call it a relationship, yet have no basis to prove that their now loved one isn't carrying something, various STIs can remain dormant in some people with no obvious signs. As someone points out you could be a Virgin and your first sexual encounter could result in you getting something, and not because your partner is some dirty shagged everything person. As with any odds, the one in bit is what you need to worry about.

I think, and this is no slur on single men, that swinging with them, should always play safe. An established couple who you have become friends with and aware they have same philosophy, probably present less risk. A couple who recently had children, tested etc and don't swing or go bareback with other men are probably fitting into the category of the above mentioned relationship person who you eventually trust isn't going to give you anything, but as mentioned here, there never any guarantees. As my mom always said if you want to be safe, keep it in your trousers and use it for stirring your tea.

Bareback is the ultimate, not always possible though.

I have to admit the whole STD thing is blown out of proportion though. If you're not having sex with people who have been with homosexuals or injecting drug users then the chances of getting any of the deadly STDs is very very low.

My sexual health clinic told me earlier this year that you're now statistically more likely to catch HIV if you are heterosexual rather than homosexual.

The Nurse told me it was because of extensive advertising campaigns aimed at gay men that it was becoming less common in that scene (although Hep B is on the increase apparently), however straight, white people often felt that they were 'bulletproof' as much of the 80s and 90s warnings were aimed at gays, drug addicts and people of colour.

No, I only have access to the latest humanities journals, not scientific or medical journals. However my best friend is a Doctor who is training to specialise in sexual health and she didn't think it would be unreasonable as a statistic.

Well, it doesn't mean she was wrong. She said it was now more likely that you would catch HIV if you were straight than gay. That is not the same as 'number of people who currently have HIV'. I got the impression she was talking about the amount of new cases. I see no reason why she would lie.

Statistically it may be so but if you are the 1 in the 1:100,000 then you 100% catch it.

It is true however that everyday activities are statistically more likely to kill or harm you than STIs.
