I have never ridden a horse but have to admit riding bareback like the North American Indians did must have been very dangerous. How on earth did they stay on?

Riding without stirrups is fine it's the absence of a saddle that I find difficult

"Riding without stirrups is fine it's the absence of a saddle that I find difficult"

How do you stay on the horse when it jumps or runs?

If it bucks you don't stay on the horse as as I found out to my cost, we were playing cowboys and Indians at the time. we also did a thing were you had to get on a horse while someone else was riding it, I got my foot in the stirrup but slipped as I was pulling my myself onto it's back and got dragged along the floor. It was at a riding school I was going at the time, (I was in my 30s) and the Christmas lesson we played games

You just need to balance well and wrap your thighs round the horse firmly but with a relatively relaxed muscle, go with the movement and rotate your hips

You try wrapping your thighs round a Cross Clydesdale

Balance and posture also work with horses movement rather than against it.

It's not as dangerous as being bareback ridden by a horse, apparently that can make your eyes seriously water

Herts

With severe help from your thigh muscles.

I hate it though, never feel steady turning and certainly don't enjoy trotting while bareback!

I imagine you'll feel the horse's back bone hard on your arse.
