the chicken lays the egg for a slightly newer "version" of chicken, as per Evolution. so, logically, I'd say the previous "version" chicken comes first.

Egg. Birds evolved from a sub-order of dinosaurs, which were egg-laying reptiles. It took millions of years for them to evolve into birds, but the method of reproduction never changed. |
