Don't mind the tight, lacey, up the bum shorts but not full knickers, bums always look like they're in a pudding bag or a hanging basket in those.

It's all about creating an illusion, think of your arse as an orange.
If you cut an orange in half it looks smaller than the one full orange.
A thong does the same thing, creates the illusion of two halves with no lines or bulges.
Whereas a large arse covered completely in cotton and bulging out at the buttock/thigh area looks twice the size.
Even worse with leggings, even jogging pants, when they bend over and you can see that massive gusset line.
Or one leg of the knickers go up between the arse cheeks NOOOOOOOO!
